WisTex got a reaction from Nathan in Serial Posts: The Good and the Bad
One thing that I have noticed on many forums, including ones that I have run myself, is the existence of serial posts. Serial posts are posts where there are hundreds of repetitive replies, such as posting different memes, or a word association game. They are typically used by members to increase their post count or to win contests, but they also can be a fun mindless game for members to participate in.
They are both good and bad, from the perspective of a forum owner.
    Good Things
Increases activity on the forums, making it more active than it otherwise would be. If it is structured as something people can reply to, it can increase replies by other users. If it is content people want to view, then it may increase readership and page views. Members feel as if they are contributing to the forum. Some serial posts can actually be fun to post to or read. Bad Things
Unless separated from normal posts, it can be used to increase post counts and points for contests. People often post content they don't own, which may lead to copyright issues. It may lead to spammy posts. It can clutter up the activity feed for other users who are trying to read normal posts. Possible Tactics
There are ways to deal with serial posts that maximize their benefits while minimizing the down side.
Have a special forum area reserved for serial posts, and move any serial post started in another forum area to this forum area. Serial posts and their replies do not count in any contest or competition. If possible, replies to serial posts do not appear in activity feeds. People have to go to the serial posts section to participate in serial posts. Optionally disable increasing someone's post count based on replies in a serial post. Using these tactics will increase activity on the forum, while keeping contests fair, while not cluttering up the rest of the forum.

Reddit excels in areas like linking you up to forums of people with similar interests who share knowledge and experiences daily.
Reddit tends to frown at online marketing as the forum administrators censor and delete messages that doesn't revolve around the issues being discussed by the forum.
Facebook excels in online marketing as they promote paid advertising which incidentally is cheaper than what most platforms offer.

WisTex got a reaction from Nathan in Does the length of a domain name make any difference?
I think a lot of it comes down to how you intend on marketing your website. If you intend on becoming a brand name, then you need something unique, memorable and relatively short, so people can type your domain name into the browser. The longer your domain, the fewer people will remember it and some may even get annoyed at having to type something really long.
On the other hand, if you aren't as concerned with branding, then longer more descriptive names may be fine, especially if most of your traffic comes from people clicking on links, and such. There also may be some SEO benefits if keywords are in the URL. In that case, the length isn't quite as important.

WisTex reacted to Nathan in How To Disable Update Notifications For Plugins In WordPress
Looking for a way to disable plugin update notifications within WordPress?  With a few lines of code dropped into your functions.php file this can be accomplished.
Why would you want to disable plugin updates within the WordPress admin area?
You don’t want the plugin updated as you’ve put custom code directly into the plugin fold and do not want it overwritten You don’t want the plugin updated as it’s not yet compatible with the version of WordPress you’re running You don’t want other admins accidentally updating the plugin To prevent the accidental update of plugins until ready In the below example I’m disabling 3 different plugins from showing as needing updates, the Perfect WooCommerce Brands, WooCommerce Predictive Search and WooCommerce Email My Cart.
function filter_plugin_updates( $value ) { unset( $value->response['perfect-woocommerce-brands/main.php'] ); unset( $value->response['woocommerce-predictive-search/wc-predictive-search.php'] ); unset( $value->response['woocommerce-email-cart/email-cart.php']); return $value; } add_filter( 'site_transient_update_plugins', 'filter_plugin_updates' ); The path you’ll find in your wp-content/plugins/ then the folder name of the plugin.  Then within the plugin folder you’ll find the main .php file that has the plugin information in the header.  Type that up and unset it like the example above and you’re all finished.  Keep in mind this is only a solution for some and if possible you should be customizing plugins correctly and not modifying the core code.

WisTex got a reaction from Nathan in Free or Premium Hosting?
You typically get what you pay for. If you have a small website with almost no traffic or a very efficient website (i.e. does not use a lot of server resources), then a free web host might work for you. But you can get much better hosting at less than $10 a month with tech support and more resources.
For a hobby website, a free web host would probably be okay, but if you are running a business or intend on making money from your website, I would avoid free hosting.
