Thomas got a reaction from Nathan in General Chat; Now the place where people dump info to boost post count?
General chat is always going to be more popular as it's under the 'other' category. Each of the Technology sections have defined borders which can and can't be posted however if you think of a topic that isn't to do with the forums above (and there are god knows how many) then it goes in here. Surely by that logic it should be the most popular place?

You will need a vBulletin lisence to download the Points System if it is placed on vBulletin.org unless it is hosted somewhere else. Talk to your Owner about that as he should be able to add an additional email account to get you access.

Thomas got a reaction from Nathan in I Need help: Acer Aspire One Netbook problems
This sounds like a power cable issue.

CHiLL would be the best to answer this as he is part of IT Support but I shall try my hardest to help you.

It sounds like the power cable/battery is the issue and the laptop itself isn't the problem.

Does the battery charge at all?
The battery itself might have been drained by overcharging it. This happens when laptops are plugged into the power connection constantly and can lead the battery to keep being charged and getting weaker and weaker.

Has the power connection been broken?
Laptops are famous for having very stupid connections that can break in general wear and tear. The little head inside the laptop might now have moved and thus can't make the connection that is needed to provide the power to the laptop. In the worse case scenario it might have been completely destroyed and need to be repaired by an authorized IT Support (IE: Acer or the place where you bought it). Normally this would cost anywhere between £30-£90. On a slightly better case it could be that there is still a connection that is happening but the computer is only receiving enough to power up and not to charge the battery as well.

    Questions that might help?
Is it a set time that it turns off?

Does it turn off all the time?

Does it do a proper shut down or simply run out of juice and turns off?

Does the laptop say it is charging?

I'd suggest following these instructions to test it out:
While the laptop is turned off give the connection a twist and turn (gently). The laptop should have an LED indicator to see if the power is connected and if it goes off at any point while the connection is still inside then that would be the problem. Charge the laptop with the laptop shut down and leave it alone for a few hours. Turn it on and leave it alone. Let it completely drain of power. If it shuts down then turn it back on. Keep doing this till the power button makes the computer do nothing. Then charge it for around an hour or 2. That should be more then enough time for the laptop to fully charge.  See how long it stays on for. One final thought might be to check what windows says about how long the charge should last for.

Good luck! And i'll poke CHiLL to see if he can think of any ideas.

I think this spoiler gives you the best insight into things too good to be true:

The way these companies make there money is by selling it at a very low cost  providing very cheap support and generally low costs all around. Think of it like a like a budget hotel. They don't do anything special but provide the very basic of accommodation.

If you did go with a very cheap host then you might find:
Very limited tech support. (Cheap Host = Cheap Staff = Less experienced to deal with your problems) Very limited resources. (The less they can give you for that $1 they will. Limit the number of email accounts, sub domaines, SQL Databases...) Very limited uptime. (I'm not saying it's going to go down every day for 4 hours but they aren't going to be providing you with the security that websites require to keep the uptime) If you really want to get behind a project (or if you think web hosting is going to be a thing for a long time) look into getting a Multiple Website Hosting Account. These hosting packages allow you to host many different websites all with the same account.

Most websites actually allow you to host multiple websites and buying a hosting package for a longer time (IE: longer then a month) then you end up saving a lot of money.

x10Premium (for example) has 3 plans:
$142.20 for 3 years (Working out at $3.95 a month) $118.80 for 2 years (Working out at $4.95 a month) $71.40 for 1 year (Working out as $5.95 a month) $6.95 for a month If your into websites for a living or pleasure then spending that extra $30 for a year of hosting then surely it's going to be worth it? Even better if a website outgrows your hosting package then you can move it on without having to do the messy 'I signed up for a 12 month contract but don't need it because my site is too big' because your other websites just gain the space.

Try this topic if your a bit unsure on about the technical side.

their is not much open source module that is actively developed with drupral... you will find much of what you want for Drupal 6.X that will not be compatible with the latest release ;(

How To Increase Your Post Count Without Being Banned

    :yahoo:

    Tip #3: Don't be agreeable

Of course, everybody likes a nice guy. Who doesn't like someone who agrees with everything you say? However, is that good for a forum? Specifically, will being agreeable increase your post count?

Consider this scenario. A few guys sit around a table sipping coffee. After a while, one guy says,

"The weather has been very good these last few days."

    The other guys reply,

    "Yeah."
    "That's right."
    "Very true."
    "I agree."

Then the guys continue sipping their coffee. In silence.

See what I mean? Being agreeable doesn't take the conversation anywhere. In fact, it takes the steam out of any conversation. And the conversation stops. When the conversation stops, the post count stops.

So what should you do? What else?! Be disagreeable! Let's go back to those guys sipping coffee at the table. After the conversation opener by the first guy, the other guys reply,

"No, not really. It has been rather wet."
"How can you say it's wet? I haven't seen a drop of rain for a whole week."
"No rain? Then you must have been inside your house for the whole week."

Isn't that so much more interesting? Doesn't that make for more lively conversation than just being agreeable? Now, don't start agreeing with me.

I think this is how he does it. First he buys a whole bag of colorful candy. Then he assigns a word to each color of the candy. After that he shakes the bag of candy and puts his hand in to grab a handful. Then he puts the candy on the table and lines them up in a row. Following the words he had assigned to each color, he then writes the topics for the new threads.

Well, that's just a wild guess. For all we know, he might be able to do it simply because he's one smart cookie.

It might turn into a like sharing although I am sure that you are all well aware that us moderators spend close enough to 23 hours trolling threads to see so as long as it doesn't get out of hand it might be alright.

However when it comes to the actual points it might be a bit different then posts. Maybe every 5 likes = 1 point?

Thomas got a reaction from Marc in What security measure should you take if you run a web site/forum?
    Basic Intro To Hacking:
There are 3 main steps into hacking starting with the easiest to the hardest.
    Guessing.
Easiest way to hack someone's password is to guess. Sounds stupid but it's true. Most people use silly stupid passwords like password, name of children or birthplace. This is where you also try the normal passwords.
    Asking Them
Again stupid; you could just outright ask someone for the password. You would be surprised about how many people are willing to give you there password. Sometimes it is just asking straight away, or needing it for a reason.
    Brute Force
The old start with a,b,c... then aa,ab,ac... the... I am sure you get it. This is why we stop people from just filling out the login form.

It is easier to do with phones/alarm codes:
    First, 1234 1111 2222 3333 4444 5555 6666 7777 8888 9999 0000
Second there DOB, children's birthdays , anniversary. Simple stuff like that.
    Third; 1111, 1112, 1113, 1114...

The idea is that with the more possibilities combinations then the harder it is to guess.

If you only allow 4 numbers 0-9 then that leads to 9 different conbinats 4 times. Thats 94. That is 6561 different combinations.

Still think your alarm is keeping you safe?

I know I should take advantage of any kind of post exchange. Running a contest during that time can be extra effective. However, what exactly contest would you recommend?

I am also thinking about multiple smaller prizes instead of a single bigger prize. Something like 3x $15 prize instead of a single $50. Do you think it will give people a feeling that they actually have better chance to win something? Or will they just feel it's not worth their time because each prize is smaller?
