Victor Leigh got a reaction from jaybee in General Chat; Now the place where people dump info to boost post count?
I somehow get the feeling that this issue came up because some forum owners feel that they are not getting their money's worth from paid posting. Personally, I would think that it's up to the forum owner to make sure that there are knowledgeable posts made in the topic-specific sections.

I do know of at least one forum owner who understands this point. He puts in the extra effort needed to supply the necessary knowhow and he is happy even though there are no replies to those threads because he counts by the number of views. So when he sees that there are a substantial number of views in those sections, it means that the knowhow he has put there is being read.

I have been on quite a few forums: some big, some small, some active, some more dead than alive. From what I have observed, the surest way of making money from a forum is through selling premium memberships. That kind of money is hard cash in the pocket. I believe there is one very big and very active forum where there is only one kind of membership - paid membership.

That's a good idea. I do that, too. Sometimes. Like when I really take the trouble to read through the wall of text. Which is not very often. More like once in a blue moon. So the bottom line still is that if you want your post to be read, don't post a wall of text.

How To Increase Your Post Count Without Being Banned

    :yahoo:

Tip #2: Don't post a wall of text

Yes, I know. Sometimes you have a mountain of knowledge to share. There's so much that you want to tell everybody. Which is fine. Just don't post it all at once.

    Why?

First, the average attention span of a net surfer is about 3 seconds. Not that net surfers are mentally-challenged. It's just that net surfers are often in a hurry. And they skim surf more than deep dive, if you get what I mean. Most of them, when met with a wall of text, will just go away. And if they don't read what you have written, what's the point of writing it at all?

    So?

Post in bite-sized pieces. As a rule of thumb, I, myself, try not to go over half-a-page on my screen. That's so whoever reads my post can still see the response to my post, if any. Anything that covers the whole screen is definitely a wall of text.

Post a bit. Wait for a response. Reply to the response. Post another bit. Wait for a response. Tit-for-tat and your post count goes up. And up. No sweat. No ban, I am very sure of that.

I am sure this must be good news for a lot of Linux users. For me, it's only mildly good news because I only play World of Warcraft.

Actually I don't see why Blizzard cannot release a Linux version of WoW. Even if I am playing with a Linux client, I still have to pay Blizzard to play on the official servers. From what I have read, there was actually a Linux version of WoW. At the beginning.

How come you have introduced four factors into the formula? The one that I learned was "Good, Fast or Cheap. Choose one. Only one". The "free" factor throws everything out of balance. Reason being that there are actually free things which are very good.

I have just googled for big forums which use SMF. Some of them are really big. Like Red and White Kop which has nearly 6 million posts and 30K members. I suppose they have found a way to use SMF efficiently and effectively. You can check it out here:

Ever since I migrated to Linux, I have using open source graphics programs which, of course, are free. At the top of my list is GIMP. I also use Inkscape. Recently I found another one which is Xara, a graphics program which is ported from Windows and released as open source. Xara works very much like CorelDraw.

Is there anyone else using open source graphics programs?

I have tried Kubuntu. It's beautiful. Very well-thought-out interface. But it's slow on my old laptop, so I have to give it up. At the moment, my laptop runs best with JWM. I could save a bit more resources by using Icewm but I like my taskbars and desktop icons.

Just curious. Is there such thing as a lightweight KDE?

Victor Leigh reacted to webdevuser in How do you tell if it's a real cloud server?
I could provide you with a long answer, but sadly my english is not good enough for using too many technicals terms :S

Anyway, just to let you know, in the end, as a user, you can not know if you are in a "Cloud", since a cloud is 99.99% virtualization (Virtualization is the concept on running virtual machines (OS within OS)) as an user of the cloud it is impossible to make the difference between a cloud or a dedicated server.

But using support of your website, you could ask them to maybe add 1GB of RAM to your account. If it take less then 30 seconds, than yes you are running on a Cloud, if it take 1hour + (you may be on a dedicated server, or the technicians are slow to make the modifications for your cloud service)

Victor Leigh got a reaction from KMRock in Best free web hosts...? Are there?
If you are in this game for the long term, you should not be looking at free hosts at all. You should get your own vps, set up your own control panel and create little sites for testing purposes. We are not talking about hundreds of dollars per month. Just 20usd per month is good enough to get a reasonably-sized vps. Myself, I pay about 20usd per month for a cloud server and I get 2Gb ram and 80Gb space with 8Tb bandwidth. Fair price?

I have never used Photoshop to produce anything. Probably it was the price that stopped me. Also when I first knew about Photoshop, it was only available for the Mac and a Mac, back then, cost more than an arm and a leg, for me, that is. So I started with a pc program which I have already forgotten the name of. All that I remembered was that it was able to rotate text without jagged edges.

Later I got a copy of CorelDraw and that was my main graphics program for many years. There was one time when I could look at any image created by Photoshop and duplicate the results with CorelDraw. Sadly, my skills have deteriorated through lack of practice for the last several years.

Now I am on LInux and I use GIMP. Also Inkscape. And recently XaraLX. Xara works very much like CorelDraw.

The isn't a trail version however you are allowed to run as many boards as you like for development purposes that are not open to the general public. This means you can especially copy the software and database onto a new sub domaine and play till your hearts content. I beleive that the license must be

In reality though as long as the board is only accessible by the staff vBulletin aren't going to send in the troops. Even more so if there no trace of the sub domain.

You will need a vBulletin lisence to download the Points System if it is placed on vBulletin.org unless it is hosted somewhere else. Talk to your Owner about that as he should be able to add an additional email account to get you access.

vBulletin allow the license to support up to 3 or 4 additional email address for being a license member across all official vBulletin boards.

Cost isn't something I can help you with as vBulletin.org where most of the developers hang out doesn't have a free se

Victor Leigh reacted to bigbigfan in How do you gain followers on Twitter?
I've come to look at Twitter as a marketing tool, not the personal tool Twitter wants it to be. As a marketing tool I get the best results when I post things about others more often than things about me or my interests. By a factor of 100 to 1 I post links to great articles on various sites related to my subject over links to my own content, sometimes even 200 to 1. The end result is my account is brown nosing others and they in turn follow my account, everyone loves to hear nice things being said about them and so of course that's what they associate with.

I have several thousand followers now and I've only sent out a dozen tweets with links to my own content. Link freely to others, promote them, and they will in turn follow you which makes tweets about your own content much stronger. It's like a freight train once you pick up steam.

Looks like there's only one real way to find out. Buy the book, I suppose. Looking at the offer price of 5usd, I think it may be a worth a try. After all I know I have spent more than that amount just to get to know a girl whom I know nothing about. There's a very good chance that this book will be more interesting than many girls I have met.

    Here's an idea.

Don't start with topics all over the place. Just start on one particular niche. There are so many things which are related to chat. For example, you can start with girl chat. Concentrate on that until you have got it running strongly. Then branch into, say, boy chat.

I think something needs to be done to capture the digital idea in the logo. So what represents digital? The simplest I can think of is the digital clock look. You know, the font that tells you straightaway that it's digital.

I just found out something while playing around with Debian. Apt-get and aptitude are said to be work the same way but actually they don't. Aptitude works better. It even takes care of missing dependencies. So it would be a good idea to use aptitude instead of apt-get.
