chiller Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 I was eleven years old when I received my first computer. I think it was for Christmas. The CPU was a Cyrix 166 and the size of the hard drive was < to 1 Gb! What you was first computer? Thomas 1 Quote
Administrators Nathan Posted February 16, 2012 Administrators Posted February 16, 2012 Haha, I definitely have that one beat My first computer that was my own (not the families) was a 386, I was probably 8 years old. Here are the specs: CPU 386 RAM 128MB Harddrive was 150MB Oh and I connected to the internet at a crazy speed of 24.4k Quote
Administrators Tony Posted February 16, 2012 Administrators Posted February 16, 2012 Oh jeez.. I like to think that I've had several first computers... When I was about 8, my parents bought a computer that had the green text on the screen with the black background... I thought it sucked Then they bought a Macintosh computer that had less than 256MB HDD - I just used it for gaming (Day of the Tentacle, Star Wars - Rougue Squadron, & Indiana Jones) When I was 15, my mom bought some old POS that had windows 98 on it... didn't work out with the video editing I was trying to do.. When I was 16, my dad got a computer through Ford that I claimed as my own, and thus started my dive into computers: Pentium 3 866MHz 512 RAM Windows ME (gross) Quote
Gabe Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Mine was from Walmart as a Christmas gift it had windows 95 on it. Not really sure of the specs. AOL chat rooms haha.. Quote
cvarr Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Hmm lets see i was 8 or 9 and it was a bulky gateway lol it is crazy how nuch technology changes quickly. Quote
Creaky Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Mine was a ZX Spectrum, the one with rubber keys. This shows how old I am Quote
RainOK Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Haha this reminds me of my first computer. Was a hewlett peckard and i loved it. Now thinking back, it is so slow compared to my now computer. Amazing how technology evolves as well and at a stupendously fast rate! Quote
nupersatural Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 I remember the moment like it was yesterday haha. This was around 9 years ago. I was heading back home from school, I remember opening the door to my room and there was this big "stash" covered with a blanket, I honestly had no idea what was under it. Then my father walked in and told me "you've been a good kid this year, don't overuse it though". I uncovered the PC holy hell I don't remember beeing more happy when I finally saw it. I wished for a PC for a loooong time since I would go to my cousin to play GTA 2 almost every weekend (amazing times). The pc was pretty good at the time. If I remember correctly it had a 1.8ghz AMD cpu,256mb of ram and a Geforce MX440 (could be mistaken). My first game on it was I think the demo of NFS hot pursuit 2, played that game for hours haha Quote
androidz Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 The first computer that I had... well, a laptop. It's the one I'm currently using. It's an ASUS laptop with a dual-core processor, 2 gigs of RAM, 320 gigs HD with 5400 rpm, however it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card and instead has the Intel chip for the GPU. Quote
Administrators Tony Posted February 20, 2012 Administrators Posted February 20, 2012 My first game on it was I think the demo of NFS hot pursuit 2, played that game for hours haha LOL... I played that game like crazy too.. Only thing I really remember about it was the terrible police sirens and loudspeaker voices Quote
W00t Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Some HP desktop with 1GB of RAM and Windows 98 installed. Quote
ukfan41 Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I had a computer my whole life growing up, but I didn't get my own true laptop until I was a junior in high school. It was a mac book pro. Quote
fakesky Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I am still using my first and only computer, an HP laptop Quote

Heyhoe Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Had an Atari ST initially. First propper PC was a Compaq deskpro? HD was 3 Gig, RAM about 128 MB This was in about 1997, No internet, just ENCARTA! Quote
Administrators Nathan Posted February 23, 2012 Administrators Posted February 23, 2012 lol Encarta, forgot about that encyclopedia. I had Encarta 95, also came with package deal of "Microsoft Bob"...Starting to feel old now Quote
Pete T Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 wow my first PC was ATS i believe was ok come with Encarta and other bits did the job at the time, the went on build my own because found out the make was not able upgrade. Quote
Heyhoe Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Yep Encarta 95 for me too. Back in the day when you could get away with printing a page off encarta for "homework". I remember doing my first peice of homework on a computer, all my mates had propper printers with colour ink! I had to use one of those old ribbon EPSON dot matrix machines with pink card if I remember correctly... I still see the dot matrix printers in chemists and other places where prescriptions are dealt with... Here was my desktop I remember now it had an Intel Celeron CPU. Cost like £1000 in all new too. Worth about 50p these days.... Quote
ryleskc Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Ok, can't resist. Kaypro Intel 8086, 4.77mhz, 512kb RAM, 2 (yes 2!) 256kb floppy drives, 9" square green screen. All in a metal box because it was a "portable" (and must have weighed 40lbs). The guy I bought it from said you could throw it and it wouldn't break. Thought about it, opted not to try it out. Oh yeah, it was connected to a whopping wide carrage Okidata dot matrix printer. Total package = $2600 in 1986. Crazy to think that my MacAir cost $1500 in August of last year some 25 years later. Wish I had a picture to share but don't. Can tell you that it (and it's immediate predecessor which was an upgrade to an 8088, 4.77+10mhz turbo mode AND a 10MB hard drive) generated a TON of dBase, Clipper and C code in its day. Quote
Talk Tech News Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 lol Encarta, forgot about that encyclopedia. I had Encarta 95, also came with package deal of "Microsoft Bob"...Starting to feel old now I remember Encarta 95, it seemed so amazing at the time. Quote
SpikeTheLobster Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Mine was a ZX Spectrum, the one with rubber keys. This shows how old I am You're about the same age as me, assuming you got yours while you were young. Mine was a ZX81 (a whole year before!) with 1k memory (and a wobbly 16k RAM pack), though a friend had an Apple ][e before that. Quote
purpkush Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 My first computer was a Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook (above). I got it as a gift from my parents in 7th or 8th grade, I can't remember exactly when. Now I own a 15" MacBook Pro that I couldn't be happier with. The Inspiron was causing me so many headaches before I made the switch, I couldn't even begin to describe... Quote
digitalink01 Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 The first computer that I can really call my own is the one I'm using now. It's just a netbook though, nothing too powerful. It's an Asus Eee pc x101h. Here's the specs: Intel N455 Atom 1.66Ghz processor MeeGo OS 10.1-inch, LED-backlit LCD, 1024 x 600 250GB HDD 1GB DDR3 Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n Bluetooth v3.0 2x USB 2.0 VGA, Ethernet, 3.5mm audio port It's not much but it's pretty decent. The specs is enough for me to get work done and even play some games. One thing I dislike about it though is that it has really small keys and I'm fat-fingered so typing can sometimes be a hassle. LOL. Quote
bryce12 Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 I got my first computer about 15 years ago and as far as I remember the specs were: Pentium I processor, 20GB HDD, 256 MB RAM, Read Only CD drive. It cost aroung $1000 and I was pretty happy with it. And to think now I have a laptop with 10X memory and RAM but I am still not happy with it LOL. Quote
Talk Tech News Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Also, it's not just specs that have changed a lot, price has. My first PC cost £1,000, now you can buy one for 25% of this. Quote
