Don't know if you (OP) already have someone else by now, but HostDuplex is a pretty good company. I know I'll be going back to them as soon as I figure out which plan I want and how I want to build up my sites.

I ended up opting for GoDaddy, mostly because just about all the services I looked at had rave reviews from everyone... except the people who gave them appalling reviews. Impossible to tell any of them from the others, to be honest, and GoDaddy have a nice stepping-stone setup where I can move from basic to intermediate to massive if I have the need. They also tend to do a LOT of discounts pretty regularly, so I figured I'd use Nathan's affiliate link and go with them.

 

Everything should hit beta soon so I'll see how the performance looks once the site's up and running.

I've heard horror stories about HostGator, to be honest, and I have no clue how much GoDaddy cost (and I'm wary since their whole "We support SOPA" mess).

 

I don't actually need top-end VPS services. I need a provider who has decent database response times, preferably through a fewer-people-per-server option that doesn't cost $50 a month for a whole pile of useless other crap I don't need.

 

To be honest, from the research I've done so far, I'm disgusted by the jacked-up prices, terrible limitations (5gb max? Hello? That'll fill up in a couple of weeks...) and useless junk being offered JUST to have a VPS, when I don't need one.

Incidentally, to the folks who say "I'm happy with xyz hosting" - thanks, but it's no help without knowing what kind of thing you have running and the load you put on the servers. I'm perfectly happy with iPage for basic (low-traffic, low-load) stuff but this is different.

 

Then I'd recommend using namecheap as a hoster. They are not related to any of the SOPA mess and they have some pretty reasonable prices up for offer.

If SOPA and political stances are important to you, get your domains from NameCheap and host with ASmallOrange. I use both of them and I am very satisfied. ASO has no overselling whatsoever so expect to pay more for less disk space.

ANHosting has never done me wrong, and I recommend them to anyone whos is involved with affiliate marketing. You get pretty much unlimited everything, and I pay about $150.00 for my two year contract.

I recommend IPXCore... they may be a bit small but they have GREAT support towards their clients. Up time is pretty good as well.

I am still with 1&1 and I have to tell you, I am very impressed. I have yet to find a better deal, the RAID 5 is awesome, and it's backed by a huge company so the downtime is very, very low. Personally, I have had only a few minutes downtime. Absolutely satisfied and recommend to anyone. Their billing is fine as well.

1&1 hosting? I've heard SO MUCH bad things about them that I was about to give them a try but just went on to look for more options. Glad to hear that you seem to be doing fine with them though.

Are you set on a VPS? I mean Hostgator's plans are unlimited (Theoretically, Not practically), SO you can probably host all your sites on their, But im not sure how they will handle the problem your facing with iPage.

Everyone's plans are unlimited, including mine on iPage. The problem is that unlimited plans are always on shared resources and the DB servers just aren't up to the challenge. Login time on a shared plan ~30 seconds. Login time on a VPS ~ 1 or 2 seconds.

 

I looked at just about every host I could find but none of them had a clue about their own DB servers. Not only is that utterly depressing, it also made it pretty clear that I had to go for VPS... and that led me to whichever company had the best "stepped" option. Which turned out to be GoDaddy.
