I don't think so I think search engines will be always more important then Twitter and Facebook and I don't think twitter will own facebook because those are two different worlds and Pinterest can be but it will never be a good traffic giver because people don't go there to find other sites :P

Well to be honest I don't know. Pinterest does seem a good platform to drive traffic to our sites but no one knows how effective it will be few months down the line. Google has just released Panda 3.3 so a lot of sites have seen a drop in traffic. Last year Google said that it will start incorporating social votes in search results so sites with high number of +1s should rank better.

As you can see there is no clear cut answer to your question, all we can do is try different things and stick with methods that work.

Well i don't think any social network will replace search engines like Google in terms of traffic. Twitter and FB do help a little but they will never be the 'go-to' place for your traffic income. Your best bet for anything to do with traffic would be to optimize your site for SEO and maybe use tweets and FB posts to help it just a little bit. That seems to be working for me a little bit. Although I ain't getting as much traffic as I would like to be getting. :P

I still think that good content / good design / frequent updates will win you the race. Yes, you can use all the tricks in the books (and should), but a bad site will never retain visitors. I do use social media to promote, I do activate in similar sites, but my main concern and effort goes into MY sites. I try to keep a good flow of quality content, take care of the community etc. So that, the moment a visitor comes to my site, I can make him/her return.

Many good answers, thanks a lot guys. You are probably right about search engines(Google) will keep on being the best source for traffic. But as some of you stated, spreading out could be beneficial. I'll always be keeping an eye open for new opportunities though.

BlackHatClass: Good points. I also believe that a strong presences in social media will have positive effects on traffic building and the sites overall status. Maybe the good old SEO days are coming to an end? Or at least the game is changing for ever?

Blackhatclass said it perfectly, you have to encompass it all. If you want traffic from all walks of life, you'll need to be a part of it all. Content will always be king. Most people don't search for articles on facebook, they use google.

Pinterest, IMO, is going to be huge. It's growing at an incredible rate and the potential to drive traffic to you and your site is greatly increasing. Get in now, create an account and get as many followers as you can. Pin something and let it go wild with repins. This to me will be a much better platform than twitter in term of getting a product, or service in front of people.

I guess it's gonna be social media, after the Google+ Your world update.. and now it's going to other countries as well. The more social presence you have, the better your site is considered, and more credibility you get.

Thats the thing. One more thing is they will be changing every year, so its best to keep a supplement in all boats. And pinterest will become a good thing when they start advertising, i think its gonna be CPM, that will be profitable for us.

Talking of pinterest, it has already become a big thing. I have got k's of free traffic in a few days from Pinterest alone for doing nothing but posting pictures. How easy..llol

You can convert them by having awesome content! :) most people wont convert, but it's still driving traffic and increasing your impressions. You can't monetize a single photo, but if they click the photo, it will drive back to the original post where it was.

What do you think will be the big thing i 2012? Will search engines loose even more to social media or are people fed up with sharing now? Will Pinterest be the next big thing for driving traffic? Will Twitter own Facebook?

I think that as long as people have egos there will be a place for sharing in our marketing design. In addition, as much as the world is dominated by the all-encompassing Google monster... it's still important to develop additional sources for traffic.

Personally, I think that the illusion of relationship (there may or may not be an actual relationship, but there is often at least an illusion of one) will be an important part in our marketing and SEO from here on out. That seems to be the common thread among the different sites, such as Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

I have a couple of friends who I know will retweet my posts. We have a slight overlap of Twitter followers, but for the most part reach two completely separate groups of people. When one of them retweets a post with a link, because they have high perceived authority and the ability to create the illusion of relationship with many people, I can count on a large influx of inbound clicks.

Whatever we can do to foster that illusion of relationship and increase our perceived authority will be important going into this next "age" of SEO/social media/marketing.

I'm actually having a squeeze page for them, where they come up on my list. Haven't started sending paid offers yet, but sign-up rate is pretty good.

Thanks, i guess thats the best we can do now. My tries with email or zip-submit is bad...really bad.

Ah, I didn't mean zip submits. I'm actually using Pinterest to build my own list.

How are you going about using Pintrest in this way? Just uploading a multitude of your own content with backlinks on it, hoping for views? This definitely seems like it's something I'd be interested in!
