If you are interested in carrying your important files and would like to keep them synced wherever you go, Dropbox is the right box to drop in. It is one of the best online File Sync servers powered by Cloud Technology that keeps your files in sync. It is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and even on Mobile Platforms like iOS, Android and Blackberry. You can even share Documents, Pictures, Music and other files with your friends and business partners.

 

Irrespective of Operating Systems and Devices you can get access to all Files and Folders that you have chosen to sync in your Dropbox Account. You also have the option to link or unlink your Dropbox Account in case you are using Public Computers frequently. When you choose a folder or file to get synced it reflects in all other devices on which you have a Dropbox account linked. On devices on which you do not want your Dropbox account linked, you also have the option to access Dropbox from the website.

If you are using Mac or Windows, installing and using Dropbox is a layman’s job. Just download Dropbox, install and drag or select folders that you want to sync. For Linux distributions, binary packages are available for Ubuntu, Fedora and Suse. The source tarball is also provided for the above. Installing Dropbox on Fedora systems is comparatively easier to installing on other Linux systems. Dropbox has a dependency on libgnome>=%{gnaome_version} and so the Dropbox has a limitation for installation on Mandriva 2009. Basically, any Linux version past GLib 2.14 will work with Dropbox. So, any recent GNOME release helps installing Dropbox. Using the following binary RPM from Fedora Core 9 will precede thorough your steps in installing Dropbox.

 

Try installing without using the –nodeps option. It ensures that all other dependencies have been met. If it does not work, go ahead and use a little force as instructed below:

The advantage in removing the dependency lets you bypass the need to build from Dropbox source and use a bundle of packages for installing it. Nautilus should be killed and restarted after the installation is complete either by using the binary package or source compilation.

 

$ killall nautilus

 

When Nautilus has restarted you can see the results for yourself. Dropbox takes over the command and asks you to enter details for a new account or your existing account. Dropbox starts downloading the source files that it needs and you are ready with Dropbox on your Linux machine. You now have all your important files from your Dropbox.

 

The status icons showing Dropbox synchronization status are same as Windows or Mac. Its green when its synchronized and turns blue when its synchronizing and adding new files.
