I assume you have just reinstalled Windows XP onto a computer? If you have, is the computer a branded laptop or desktop? If it is, you may be able to check on the manufacturers website for all the drivers available, and download the Windows XP ones. If it is a self build box, you will need to find the drivers for the motherboard, which includes sound, LAN, chipset, graphics and more. Also the drivers for all (if any) expansion cards, such as graphics cards, sound cards, network cards, etc. You would have to visit the manufacturers website of each to get the drivers. It might well be possible to just get the LAN driver, then connect to Windows Updates, and see if that can download any drivers for you.

As for the anti-virus, I would recommend removing McAfee, and having a look at this thread;

Either way, with missing drivers, the methodology in my post stands, check the manufactures website for drivers.

When you said you can only see your background, do you egtting an error like 'Windows explorer has stopped responding'?

Also CHill was right mate you will need to find drivers for your hardware from manufacturers websites, i.e. if it is a Gigabyte motherboard then you will need to visit the gigabyte website etc. To find out what your devices are go to the device manager which cna be located in control pannel-system-hardware tab. The devices that dont have drivers will have a yellow symbol next to them, right click them and go to properties then details and a vendor ID should be listed along with a Device ID. Plug the numbers into this website http://www.pcidatabase.com/

ford, y would i pm them all separately, when its much more convenient and simple for me to write it on here, boosting their posts, as requested. yes, every1 is able to reply, but i thought people might have the common sense to read who i addressed it to and keep there noisy, prying snouts out of it.
