A small CMS or CMS like Joomla?

Recommended Posts

What kinda CMS do you prefer? Something like Joomla or Wordpress as a framework or something you implement into your own design like CuteNews? I've used both and Cutenews works well for quick sites that aren't gonna be getting tons of updates and don't need to look too fancy.

I have never used CMS until today. I have only made simple websites which don't have updating content. It is all stable. Otherwise, I use forums.

Entirely depends on what you're doing. If you're building a large site with lots of features that are available within Drupal or Joomla then you should use one if it will save you significant amounts of time. However you won't fully understand the working of it without working on the software for a long time which is often why it's a good idea to build your own as you know exactly how it's been put together.

You can get some fantastic sites like Ecademy which is built on Drupal but then most of the biggest sites like Facebook are built using their own code suggesting that you're more likely to have big success if it's completely your project from start to finish. I personally would choose to write my own script or use something much smaller and lightweight so I could understand it more easily.

I've been swearing off against small CMS/scripts for sites mainly because there's the small (small, but still there) chance that it might get abandoned by the developer somewhere along the run. With Wordpress and Joomla however, you're pretty sure it'll stay for decades to come because of the extensive number of users and the size of its development team working on it. I was an avid fan of a small script before called Fusion News which was, undoubtedly, intimately better than CuteNews, but alas, the developer had to move on to the bigger things in his life and abandoned the script. I had to move on to Wordpress then, and I'm very happy with the choice, given that WP offers a whole lot of features not possible with a smaller script.

The only CMS I have ever used is WordPress. I did install Joomla once but could not figure out what to do with it. I don't know a lot about web designing or web development so I try to stick to a popular CMS with a lot of support. WordPress completely fits my needs I can do what ever I want with it by installing the right theme and the right plugins.
