The only way I've ever had any kind of useful traffic from blogs is by commenting to the point where the owner becomes a friend and mentions something I post. You never know when that one random comment you make might be the one that gets you more than a trickle, too, and I'd hate to try to limit myself to either high PR -or- niche related blogs. That might be erither because your comment is not good enough, or the blog you are commenting on is not good enough. And for what you do, only niche-relevant blogs would work, right? And for what you do, only niche-relevant blogs would work, right? It's more because I don't cater to the BS inspirational and/or motivational crowd, I think. The vast majority of blog visitors in my niche just want their quick, easy fix of nonsense quotes or the same old regurgitated "secrets" (which aren't) and don't give two hoots about what other people are doing or taking time to read something that can help them improve. Since I'm not really catering to the low end, find-me-a-cheap-and-easy-job crowd, they go somewhere else, I guess. That's the price of trying to do something I consider worthwhile rather than just playing to the masses. And yes, niche relevance is critical for my stuff. Bummer, really! The reason being is that although these links are usually nofollow, they can bring you some traffic if your comments are relevant and useful. I don't know which one is more valuable but I think one is for immediate traffic which the other is for improving search engine rankings. Maybe not, but a blog owner is also more likely to remove your comment entirely if you put the link directly in your comment, too. If you're going to go that route, make sure you're linking to a specific part of your site that's relevant to what you're saying, so it doesn't come off as spammy. I just wonder if post your user name with hyperlink to your own article on a same niche site would help with SEO the same way as posting a link within your comment. I rarely ever accept a comment on my blogs with a URL in it. Akismet automatically dumps most in the spam folder but if any get through you'd have to be very well-established as a commenter for me to leave it in. That's just the way it is.
