"Republish my blog free"

Recommended Posts

This is the beginning of an email I got earlier:

Need A Blog Post? Use Mine!

No, no, I'm not off my rocker!

I am in the process of adapting the licensing on my blog to openly encourage re-publication with attribution.

Essentially that means you can help yourself to re-use any post on my blog as long as you credit me, with name and link to the post title, as the author.

I can't help but wonder how that would work out with search engines, though. Isn't that going to count as duplicate content, which means the person taking it won't get much out of it...although the owner who is encouraging will still get the backlinks, right?

Since the blog owner is posting the content before anyone else re-publishes it, he does have an advantage. And no, this kind of duplicate content doesn't hurt. Only the duplicate content within the same domain, is marked as "duplicate" and hidden in SERPs.

And if you use a source link then it should be fine as they get a free backlink too.

Hmm. I was under the impression that that's why scraper sites end up in the sandbox after a while is because it's all duplicate content and search engines just end up ignoring it. :S

I won't expect a genuine blogger to publish only duplicate content from other blogs.

These kind of licenses are useful when a person finds some content useful, and wants to syndicate it on their blog. If you go after re-publishing every post, then that's fatal for sure.
