New .free domains.

Recommended Posts

As you probably already know, you can pre-register .free domains at dotfree.com. They're launching in 2013, so you're gonna have to wait to use the domains. They allow up to 20 domains for each account.

Note: when pre-registering domains don't waist your opportunity by trying to get domains that will not be awarded to you anyway - like pepsi.free, or walmart.free. Go for generic stuff like creditscore.free or loseweight.free

Why wouldn't they be awarded to you anyway?

Because those are trademarked names. You can try preregistering pepsi.free if you want, but they own the name and will have access to it first...and likely already have it set and ready to go anyway.

You can request up to 20 domains, but 1 account will get only 1 domain. So you can pre-register 20 domains, but will end up with only 1.

Can you put a source to verify your statement? Thanks. :)

On their website, it is stated that you can pre-register for about 25 domains. But it is not indicated that you can only own 1.

I applied for 20, let's see if I get them. I wasn't aware of .free TLD so I was completely taken by surprise by this thread. I am also concerned that now we have too many TLDs which is making web a chaotic place, does anyone else feel the same?

As quoted from the News section on that website: "Amazon and Google will have to square off against each other for control over 21 potential new Top Level Domains, including .FREE it was revealed June, 14th 2012 by ICANN. Three more companies (Minds&Machines, Uniregistry & Donuts Inc.) have applied to operate the upcoming .FREE gTLD. More information will be posted here soon."

I personally think they are a bunch of nobodies who are trying to get something out of the .free hype. Right now all domains are showing as "available", including "download", "sex" or "games". What a joke!

Yeah it is, the site will still tell me I got domains that I know others took.

Gee, this sounded interesting. I had not heard of the .free in the recent past. I guess there is no harm in trying to pick 20 names if they're free. But it doesn't sound like one should rely on them. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I'm off to go pick out my names! :)

One moment, please. The extension is 'free' but that doesn't mean 'free' as in you don't have to pay for it, right? So how much is the registration fee for the first year? And for subsequent years?

No they are completely free.

That's what I thought but it does say "free preregistration service for .free" meaning only the preregistration could be free :/ Also I think the site's broken or something. I preregistered google.free and was surprised to see noone took it. Then I tried it just again and it says available :/

Nope read up further in this thread. It let Tony and I register the same domain as well. So I gotta believe it lets you register anything, then when time comes to give them out whoever registered it first will get that one.

http://www.dotfree.com/all-the-answers.html would be a good place to go for more info. Technically, right now you can register up to 25 names without paying anything. They will have an extension of .free. At some point in the future you would have to pay money to hold the name. That is, if they still have it to 'give' to you. They don't guarantee anything at this point. At the end of the day, it almost sounds like potentially if you want to hold on to the name, they're going to auction it off to the highest bidder. That is probably why some people are reporting that they KNOW a name is already taken but they are still able to pre-register it for themselves. This company said that they are as 'authorized as any other registrar or institution'. IMO this means that other companies could be allowing customers to pre-register the same names as you are.
