BlackHatClass
What would we do if google did not exist?
ChuckTesta
I'd use another search engine. Yahoo's been around for a while... AOL before that... If google weren't so prominent, someone else would be.
Godric
We would do what we did before google came until someone make something better than google. IMO Bing is improving a lot recently. Someday they might even compete with google.

IMO Bing is improving a lot recently. Someday they might even compete with google. I don't think there was much to do on the web before Google. I mean all that existed were directories (Even Yahoo was a directory back then). And, I don't think it's possible now, or easy for that matter, to get the hang of "Google it". SpikeTheLobster
I don't think there was much to do on the web before Google. I mean all that existed were directories (Even Yahoo was a directory back then). Huh? There was PLENTY to do online before Google. Forums, sites, games, everything that's there now, pretty much. It was just a little harder to find (and most of it was text-based in the newsgroups). Google hasn't fundamentally changed the Internet - they've fundamentally changed how we find things, is all. (Well, not all... but mostly.) ChuckTesta and Godric
ChuckTesta
Spikethelobster is who i'm siding with. I use google, i like them... but they are a search engine to me only. Nothing more. And if they weren't around... i'd use another search engine. Heck, as a matter of fact, i've switched to Bing most recently because of their rewards program. I used internet just before google entered the scene. That was 1998. The way we used to use the internet was through top sites and directories, They were the big information hubs back in the day. There was no name of search engines anywhere.
Jessi
Add mine to the list of names there. Yes, Google is huge now, but if it weren't them, it'd be someone else. For a search engine, I'd simply use something else. Copy, paste, and apply that to all their other services, too. It's kind of like saying, "What would I do without GE?" I'd buy a different brand of light bulbs or refrigerators... Even though they might've made lots of strides in innovation, it doesn't mean it'd be so horrible without them. I remember using AltaVista and WebCrawler, for starters. WebCrawler was excellent: it was like doing a gopher search without all the hassle. I remember being really impressed by that. Ah, how things have changed!
TheDespite
Like already mentioned. Some other corporation would've made the billions that Google has. You should not only consecrate in Google search, but the other services they provide as well, such as Adsense, Youtube, Google Docs and Google Chrome. bryce12
I would be using another search engine. There were many search engines before google came along, Altavista, AOL, Yahoo were some of the most popular ones. The reason most people use Google is because they have a better system to fetch relevant results. If somebody creates a better algorithm, I'm sure people will not hesitate to move to that site. Think what happened to Myspace when Facebook started becoming popular.

CHiLL
I'd probably still be using Yahoo! for Internet searches, and Hotmail for my personal email.
Grumpy
I don't really know... Really, if you think back, Google was the first search engine invented, I believe. Maybe, if Google was never created, the others wouldn't have been able to come up with the idea of creating one, so maybe there'd be no other search engines to fall back on in the event Google was never created. SpikeTheLobster
I don't really know... Really, if you think back, Google was the first search engine invented, I believe. No, it wasn't. Not by a long way. Archie was the first (proper) search engine, back in 1990. Google didn't even exist until 8 years later and was predated by a LOT of engines. Google was just the first to take it very seriously, especially from the point of view of relevance.

johnr
Yahoo was a pretty good search engine back then and Microsoft has made Bing as a pretty good contender for Search results. I'm not sure if I would miss Google.
Ezekiel
Yeah, Godric is right. If Google was never created or it suddenly disappeared. Programmers around the world would race to create the best Search Engine out there, since they saw how much money Google made. If Google never exited, I think previous social networking site like; Friendster, MySpace and others. All of these social networking sites would be used as a way to advertise. fakesky
I am wondering what made google so successful and why it went so ahead of others...not really into history...do they really provide the most quality search results ? ridwan sameer
If it was never there we would never be dependent on it. Either way, someone else would have come up with something like it.
S.O. Price
We would do what we did before google came until someone make something better than google. IMO Bing is improving a lot recently. Someday they might even compete with google. I think things have moved far enough along that some other company(ies) would pick up the slack where google left off. I also recently read an article about how Bing has come out with some upgrades in their webmaster tools that might be worth checking out. I also have switched to Bing because they do offer rewards for searches. I do A LOT of searching on line and I might as well get an amazon card now and then in return for my search efforts. I used to scorn Bing a bit because it is an MS product and they were such bullies at times, but now I'm kind of seeing google as a bully because they are so invasive into everything that people do. I'm probably dating myself again, but I remember the olden days when IBM aka. Big Blue was the ALL TO END ALL. As you can see, IBM still exists but as far as them being the world leader in anything, well, they're not. They are just an average company now. For a while, it actually looked like they were going to go under.
Victor Leigh
No Google? How can that be? In the beginning was the search and the search was with Google and the search was Google ... Just kidding. So what? No Google, no die. There will be plenty of other companies who will provide the same service. Maybe even better. Yes, I said that. Maybe even better. Now, even if another company offers a better service, it would be totally overshadowed by Google. Say, I thought there's some kind of law against that kind of monopoly. Something called anti-trust. I remember Microsoft being taken to court over this issue. How come Google has never been investigated?
