Dealing With Email Spam

So it seems my main iCloud Eamil address is getting a lot of spam emails.

 

Normally when this happens I change addresses but I'm finally happy with my email address and don't want to go through the horrible transfer. So what do you guys do to help stop it? Or is this something that doesn't happen to you.

I have Thunderbird's filters set so tightly that I doubt my own mother could get an email through to my inbox if she were using anything other than her own PC. Do you use any kind of POP3 client?

Always seems to be catch 22 to me. You can filter it to death, in which case you get no spam but it catches some of your legit emails. Or you can not filter it much at all and start adding things to your spam list manually.

 

Depends on what service you use I guess. I know with gmail they have an "All mail" filter which I look at occasionally, meaning I can catch this items which get incidentally added to the spam folder and remove them. Actually works quite well.

I've had the same issues, no matter what I do if I filter for spam it seems I miss legitimate emails, I run with my spam filter completely turned off on new emails. As I get spammers I will add their domains to my blacklist though.

Domains don't really work, since they mask them so often (or send through gmail, for example).

 

Personally, I work the other way around when starting a new account. Assume everything is spam and whitelist the real people by address or domain (if appropriate). It takes a bit longer to get it right, of course, but not as long as you'd think.

 

As far as gmail goes, I *hate* their spam filter. I'm constantly having to pull stuff out of the spam box, no matter how many times I tell them it's not spam. Like WP notifications from my OWN blogs, for example... pile of crap, their filter. And you can't switch it off. Smart.

I never have such an issue with my hotmail account, Most of the spam gets filtered into the spam folder.

I actually don't have to pull much out of my spam filter, thankfully. I only check it every few weeks and rarely have anything sitting there that shouldn't be.

 

What does drive me crazy, though, is that filters aren't automatically assumed to not be spam. I mean, realistically, if I took the time to filter/label something myself, that pretty much means that a month later, I don't consider that to be spam....I -want- to see it. It'd make a lot more sense to assume those things aren't spam.

I guess it's just the joys of working with the iCloud. I might have to invest some time into getting another gmail account.

I've had my Yahoo account for a long time. Aside from reporting spam, I've also created filters to send know spam stuff directly into the trash. Eventually when their software shows you're not even opening the emails you get taken off the list or their isp finally catches up to them.
