S.O. Price
Hi, So what is the consensus of everyone? Does google use meta tag for rankings or not? I've done some research and I hear opinions both ways. I've head that google has pretty much abandoned meta tags and then I read some information where it sounds like they've revived their use. Is google the only search engine in use? No, and what I've heard about other search engines is that they still make use of meta tags. In that case I suppose it might be a good idea to still put some effort into the meta. Opinions please! Administrators Nathan Posted June 9, 2012 Administrators Share Posted June 9, 2012 It's probably good practice to leave on the page, but Google no longer looks at them. They only define what your site is about by keywords they find on your page that are viewable on your page. With that said as meta keywords are now viewable on your page they are not taken into account for SEO.
Talk Tech News
I do use meta tags. I have heard people say that they are not as important as they once were. The way I look at it is that it can do no harm, so it is worth doing.
Ram8349
Correct me if I am wrong. I don't think any search engine is still using meta tag. Meta description on the other hand is used for displaying to the people who searched for the term, and it's what catches their eyes...in other word it matters only to conversion rate. None matters in SERP or rank. Edited June 10, 2012 by Ram8349
bryce12
Search engines stopped ranking webpages based on META tags long time back. But the tags, especially the description tag, still has its place. A lot of search engines display the text placed in META description tag alongside the website URL. So it serves like a mini ad for your site and naturally it will lead to more clicks if you write the description well. That's the reason why I create unique meta tags for all my pages but I don't expect my sites to rank because of them.

Jessi
Google does NOT look at meta tags, but you're right that they're not the only search engine. I still add them to my sites because I figure other search engines might be seeing them. It only takes a few minutes and is worth the possible trickle of traffic. Marc
I keep them added in, however I do not believe that google uses them

While Google doesn't use them I still have them in there as you are not penalized for them.
