Facebook is for moms, not kids now

Recommended Posts

Facebook itself is no longer an adolescent. At 8, it’s getting

long in the tooth for a social network. And for some teens, the novelty

has worn off.

"Facebook is just not the big fad anymore," said Kim

Franklin, a 15-year-old from Gaithersburg, Md., who does not have a

Facebook account and prefers social media site Tumblr. "It was

like everybody was constantly on there, but now not so much."

Franklin said her 13-year-old sister Nicole hasn’t signed up for

a Facebook account either.

Meanwhile, Laura Franklin, the girls’ 37-year-old mother, always

has Facebook open on her computer while working on her parenting blog,

Better in Bulk. That, she said, has led her teen daughters to dub Facebook

a "mom thing."

Apparently, this next generation that is coming up is rather anti-Facebook. It's not pretty "uncool" and they tend to prefer other sites. Judging by what I personally see on FB, I really want to disagree, but it does kind of make sense. How does this fit into your site goals to know that the up and coming teens aren't going to be later interested in your social media efforts?

For a start, I don't see anything like that happening yet. I can still see plenty of teenagers making a nuisance of themselves on Facebook pages, or having a good time making friends and having a virtual social like in Facebook, depending on your viewpoint. Facebook themselves probably saw the same trend, which is Facebook attracting more and more teenagers and pre-teens, because they are considering opening Facebook registerations to children below 13.

The 13-year-old minimal age requirement is totally pointless. It is easy to lie about age when people sign up. As the matter of fact, I know my friend's sister and her friends who are only age 10~11 all have their Facebook accounts. Kids these days also know too much. A few small conversation with them scared the hell out of me. Who the heck taught them all those "forbidden" information when we were their age?

I agree with it too. Even though I'm not really a big user, I am able to contact many of old high school friends and co-workers. I am amazed at the number of people I have reconnected with. When I first joined hardly any one my age was on FB. Now, it's common for the *older* ( I know it relatively) to be on FB.

I have seen that the younger generation (at least where I live) is declining in Facebook usage. I remember seeing them post 24/7, just on it posting everything that you could know! Nowadays, they are out and about traveling, not caring much for their Facebook. I have also talked to my mom as well, and she has been using Facebook more often. I suppose the older generation is getting used to technology!

Maybe some of those little kiddies who are not on Facebook are hanging out at the Habbo Hotel. I read somewhere that they have something like 50 million kiddies playing there.

Still?! I thought that died many moon ago?!

Well, it's still for kids too...just not as much anymore. And with the fact that social games are losing steam on it (considering Zynga stock droppping rapidly) It may not be much for the moms soon either. When I look at Facebook as a whole right now, I can see why some analyst are predicting the demise of it. At first I didn't believe that, but after I saw Zynga's stock drop and the slowing of Facebook games (which is what made Facebook so popular to start with) my tune has changed.

Many moons ago? I didn't know about that. There's something published on June 19, 2012 about Habbo Hotel. You can read about it here:

I have just read the news that some consumer groups are voicing their concerns about Facebook opening registrations to pre-teens. One of their main concerns is the placement of ads. More information here:

Its stupid too as no matter whether its allowed or not they are still on there LOL. Besides, PARENTS should control what their kids do not the governments. All the governements are doing at the moment is making parents feel safe and at times stupid.

Didn't they get rid of the 13 years old age limit? I thought they were making it open to children now :3

I think that idea is still on the drawing board. Mark was reported to have thought of making it possible for under-13s to make their own Facebook accounts. I don't think it's implemented yet.

I have to agree. I'm 22 so not a teen but I have a tumblr account and I see the appeal for teens. On facebook I have most of my family and relatives as friends, even the older generation. You have to be very careful what you post, what groups to join, etc. Facebook is too public and too connected to the real world. On facebook you have to keep appearances. Tumblr can be completely annonymous if you want. I use tumblr to connect with like minded friends from all over the world. I also use facebook groups for that but only if they are private and the name is not an obvious giveaway to what the group is about. The way I use tumblr is more like I used to use myspace when I was a teen, so I can understand why teens like it more than facebook.

Uhh nope. A lot of kids nowadays use Facebook, generally towards the much older teenage population (13-18)

Unfortunately however, a lot of these kids set everything to public, so a stranger can pose as a fake friend and invade into other peoples business.
