How long before you trust someone enough to make him admin/mod?

Recommended Posts

All forums require more than just a single admin. So I think the best ways to get more mods or admin is either to pay to hire, or to promote someone from the existing member base.

In the second case, how long would it take you to trust someone?

What precautions woud you take to preventing someone mess with you after you give the power of mod?

They don't require more than a single admin. They may require more than one moderator though depending on the size.

As far as trusting your moderators, you should talk to them some before giving them powers to evaluate what type of person they are. You can also check your forums Moderator Logs if you think something fishy is going on.

I would make someone an admin only I know him personally. That way I can knock at his door and kick him if he is upto something mischievous. On a serious note, I agree with Nathan and Ridwan; there's no need to have multiple admins. Have separate mods for different subforums and make sure they do their job.

I have only given one person outside my family admin on one of my sites, and this was for the sole reason of him being a developer I trust and works with me on numerus projects for my site. If it hadnt have been for that I have never seen the need to make anyone higher than a supermod on my site.

As for how long before you trust someone enough, the answer is "how long is a peice of string?". You may have well asked the very same question as it depends on yourself really. However any moderators on my site only have the ability to soft delete posts, I have edit recovery if needbe as well so they cannot break anything.

As for the admin, he could never take away more than a few hours worth of the site anyways. Its backed up 4 times each day therefore at absolute worse if he killed my server it would be a case of sorting the server out, uploading all the files, restoring the database and back up and running. You have to take more precations the more you allow in, its as simple as that really.

The reason for another admin is for a tech admin position. Since I am not yet an expert on certain software used on my site, a tech admin is needed for the time being.

I have had two tech admin so far. One said he was "volunteer" but accept donation. He actually requested two payments, and I gave him both. He got some stuff done, but he was extremely slow on doing the job. He could have done everything within days, but he dragged it on for more than a month and call it "time consuming" which is an excuse for more "donation". Then all the sudden he disappeared soon after the second "donation". I tried to contact him multiple times, 3 weeks after his disappearence, he emailed back said he'd be back in another week. But two months after his disappearence, he never came back once. So I removed all his access.

For second tech admin, he also promised me to do this, to do that...he was fast on doing certain task, but he would make large changes without checking if there is a bug...left my forum with a huge bug in apparence and didn't come back for over 2 weeks until I repeatedly contacted him to fix what he started. Over one month after his promise, he had only done two of the dozen things he promised, and he hasn't logged in for a month.

I am quite frustrated on how to get good tech admin who will do jobs in a timely manner...and also can be trusted.

I am also willng to pay or "donate" whatever you call it...not at rip off prices.

As others said, more than one admin certainly isn't necessary. Even more than one mod isn't necessary for a very long time if the admin is able and willing to handle it themselves.

As for the main question, though, I would say quite a while. I can't imagine myself ever hiring someone outside the forum to mod it either as I'd much prefer someone who was actively on the site and enjoying it already. Before I ever gave someone access to being an admin, I'd likely have to consider them a level of "close friend" even if it were business-related for the forum, which takes a fair bit of time usually.

I would setup a development forum on a subdomain and give them admin access there. That way they can test there application there without taking down your board and once complete, tested, and working you can then move it to your production forum.

That for me personally takes a fair amount of time unless of course I know the person beforehand. You can't give that kind of position out so easily because for starters, trust and loyalty have to be developed first.
