Victor Leigh
Although dying while working at a computer has not reached epidemic proportions yet, there has been worries that spending too much time at the computer would lead to health hazards. Recently there was a study which showed that we may live longer if we sit less. What do you think? Should we change the height of our computer desks so that we can work at our computers while standing up? Administrators Nathan Posted July 11, 2012 Administrators Share Posted July 11, 2012 Does exercise have any effect on this? While I do sit at the computer probably 12 hours a day, I do workout 1 hour each night.
JimBobIV
I don't see why not, really; they're advocating mild excerise in place of so much TV time. I've heard some bloggers go on about how much they enjoy their standing desks, but it's something I could probably never do. I worked as a dishwasher for a few months at a fairly popular beachside motel/restaraunt, and even if the dining area was empty I wasn't allowed to sit down, despite the dishes being washed and put away, the trash taken to the dumpsters, etc. That's 6-8 hours a night, 10 if there was a wedding, and my back or legs would always be sore after four hours or so, even if I'd spent most of the shift standing in place. The same thing would happen with a standing desk, and it'd annoy me to no end. I'll just do a bit more biking or jogging and call it good. bryce12
Actually standing desks are available in the market but they are not that popular yet. Here are some of the bestselling ones from Amazon http://www.amazon.co...ing desk&page=1 Edited July 11, 2012 by bryce12
Victor Leigh
When I was working in the press long ago, we have a lot of standing desks in the make-up room. The make-up here refers to making up the pages for printing, not making up faces for dating. Standing desks are very much more convenient when we need to do things in a hurry. We do have high stools to rest on when we want to.
Jessi
I'm actually standing at my desk, dancing currently, while I work. It's pretty easy to make a standing desk by putting a box under your monitor and another under your keyboard. That way you can change it in a moment's notice to sit instead when you feel like it. I know some people who put their computer/laptop at the kitchen bar so it's at the right height full time.
rcturbos
I have heard about this. awhile ago, while it's rumors I'm sure most of it's true. I think one of those stand up desk would just be torture, I wouldn't be able to stand up all day while at the computer.. I exercise at least twice a day. Victor Leigh
I think working at your computer while standing up does have some advantages. For one, you won't work too long at your computer in one go. Another benefit would be that you will be moving your body as you work while is very much better than sitting. If you have a setup like this: then you would really be able to exercise while you work.

If you're the type who is at a desk for 8-12 hours a day, that would be killer on your feet especially. Adding standing slots to your work rotation could be beneficial, though. I actually find that I'm more productive when I stand sometimes because it keeps me from slouching and becoming lazy/tired.
Marc
I am at my computer all day and all night, every day. I think the main thing has to be the exercise that does it. At the end of the day even someone like Nathan who exercises for 1hr a day every day will not get even near the same amount of exercise as someone who works on their feet and never does any other exercise. Victor Leigh
At the moment, I haven't got a standing desk yet but I am looking into getting one. In the meantime, I make do by climbing up 14 floors every night for my exercise.
francrislee
It is quite obvioous already that the world we live in is not safe anymore, that's why government pays attention to health more than anything else. WIth all these technological advancement, we tend to limit our exercise period and focus more on our computer activity which in turns lead to sedentary lifestyle with its complications such as heart disease because you dont have your exercise anymore. BUt that's just one thing, staying longer with your computer strain your eyes causing damage to your eyes and so many more. Not that I discourage the usage of computers rather I, as a health practitioner, encourage that along our computer activities, we find time to relax and maximiza the use of other technologies that could limit further damge to our bodily system. For example, if you're wearing eyeglasses then try to enhance them by putting Anti UV rays to your lenses, have at least 1 regular 5-10minutes of exercise every and a lot more. Hope this helps! Good day!
ion
I think no need to adjust the sitting or the height of our computers, all we need is the proper stretching. and should always stand up every one hour I think. Actually in my case, most of the time I'm lay down on my bed while facing the computer. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse, and the monitor almost two meters away from me. wallet
We should not work at all....but this is something impossible. I think that working fewer hours than usual may not harm us. Besides if we make a lot of exercises and take care of our health there will be no harm.
hoppip93
Standing up for long hours also have its own risks, primarily varicose veins and even cardiovascular disorders due to problems with blood circulation. I think the current setup works but you should take time exercising everyday or taking breaks to walk around after sitting for a while. Well, aside from hitting the gym, you should also consider eating nutritious food and maintain a healthy diet while doing workouts. Surely, you will stay fit even though you are working on your computer for long hours. Nathan
ion
We should do some stretching while facing the computer. Our company allowed us to walk inside the office while waiting for some calls. They also allowed us to lay on the ground if we want just to avoid the back pain for long hours of working. I think the milk and other vitamins for bones is applicable for those who facing this kind of work, the long hours of sits.
jaybee
I definitely agree that sitting all day is dangerous to our health and our body. I'm actually 19 and as early as 17 I have been experiencing back pains because I always sit longer while looking at my pc. I love to watch videos and browse the internet and mostly I spend at 7-9 hours a day just sitting. With that habit, I am unable to sit longer anymore because my butt will hurt as well as my back. My posture is also affected because of it and it makes me very uncomfortable to walk.
