DarkGizmo
What is the best linux distro to slap on my HP Mini 110-3030NR netbook? I'm looking to wipe Windows 7 Starter from it since it's just too slow and laggy. What would be the best distro to use in it's place? I feel Ubuntu now is a bit too heavy for it. So i'm looking for something light....really light that'll make my 1GB 1.66ghz atom processor netbook run really snappy.
Administrators Nathan Posted February 18, 2012 Administrators Share Posted February 18, 2012 I've only ever used Ubuntu and had great results. I know Ubuntu used to have a lite version, but I think it has been abandon for many years now. My want to give Damn Small Linux a try. I've never used, but read some good things about it. Administrators Tony Posted February 18, 2012 Administrators Share Posted February 18, 2012 I'm sure you've been there before, but there is a lot of good info over at http://distrowatch.com/
DarkGizmo
I found one called TinyMe that looks promising......it seems to just have the bare essentials to Ubuntu.
RainOK
Ubuntu is the way to go. Does everything you will ever need from linux. Heard some of the others like TinyMe but if its the same as Ubuntu, why not just use Ubuntu?
Creaky
I've just installed Mint on an old laptop, liking it so far. Not used Ubuntu in quite a while, need to take a look at the latest release.
W00t
Ubuntu or Mint, depending on what you're looking for. Mint is the easier to use, but Ubuntu offers finer grain control over what exactly goes on.

Creaky
It's Dell Inspiron 1720, full spec here. Don't think they produce this model anymore though http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs/laptops-and-netbooks/dell-inspiron-1720-25224/specification
Talk Tech News
Personally I would go for Ubuntu, much more flexibility.
objecture
If you run into speed issues with Ubuntu give Xubuntu a try. It uses the Xfce desktop environment instead of Gnome which is much less resource dependent.
DarkGizmo
I was thinking that. I figured either Xubuntu or the XFCE version of Mint......I'll probably end up putting Xubuntu on here though. I figured Xubuntu would be a lot more light-weight then Ubuntu since XFCE is as you said, less resource hungry. I'm not sure about Linux Mint's latest version since it uses GNOME3. I did hear they had a XFCE version of Mint, I'd just have to find it to test it out I suppose.

chiller
Start with Ubuntu, just to be "safe". Then, choose another distro if you are not satisfied with it (personally, I like OpenSuse very much).
DarkGizmo
I've tried ubuntu on this netbook before and it just didn't run as fast as I'd like it to. So I'm gonna try Xubuntu and then Mint followed by TinyMe if Xubuntu or Mint fail and don't work well. TinyMe will be a last resort however. I think Xubuntu will work just fine though, from my experience. Just seems like the better option for right now. I'll try it out soon when I can find the time to load it up onto my netbook, i've just been super busy with other things lately and I haven't had the time to do anything with my netbook as of late. I originally bought it to hackintosh it but it proved to be harder then anticipated.....so I'd like a distro of linux that looks and feels similar to OSX.
