Thomas Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Something that's been bugging me for the last couple of weeks is the cost of applications for my little Mac. Someone that uses Apple a lot (iPad, iPhone, MacBook Pro) I'd rather like to make the full switch to Apple but currently what's putting me off is the cost. Just the standard hardware is more expensive let alone the applications. A quick comparison is that for Microsoft Office 2010 is around £50 for me for the PC but around £100 for the Mac. As a struggling student that has to have some basic software but for the price hike I'd rather stay with my PC. Quote
Administrators Nathan Posted January 3, 2013 Administrators Posted January 3, 2013 I know some of their products are created in the USA, but not all. They also have plans of bringing more of it back from China. I assume this will increase costs? This wouldn't explain the software cost issue though. I've done some Googl'ing but haven't found much. People say the hardware is better and software is also. Not sure I agree though. I like my iPad and iPhone, but can't justify the computer costs. Especially when I use OS specific software for Windows. Why are you using a Mac for your computer? Quote
Victor Leigh Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 I thought Mac and Mac products are supposed to be more expensive. That's more or less their trademark, isn't it? You pay more for the bragging rights. Myself, I am a strong believer in free software. That's why I use Linux. Plus OpenOffice and Gimp and VLC. All very well-developed software with strong support. Free, of course. Quote

On the contrary, creating products in China and exporting them reduce the cost of the fabrication of the product... As for the hardware part, it is the same hardware that you can find in any pc... so their no change their. The main point of why Mac is better than any Windows computer (atleast for me) is the software part, principally the OS. The OS on a mac is simply much better, less laggy than anything Windows offer... Why does it cost more? Sadly Apple signed a lot of contracts with third-party compagnies for using closed licences, and for each Mac producted, they must paid $XXX to third-party... so that increase the price. Also, it will cost more for the simple fact that when you go to an Apple store, you will have almost one employe per client, their will reduce the waiting time to the maximal so you don't have to wait (Another strong point) And finally, it cost more because instead of taking a profit of like 10-20% on their products like most compagnies does, they will try to get a 50-200% profits... DarkGizmo Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I own a macbook that's from 2009. I use it for coding and designing, nothing more. It used to be my every day driver up until about 4 months ago. The hard drive on it died on me about 7 months back and I had to swap it for an SSD, easy process. What I hate is the fact Apple did away with their optical drives, and so now they force you to spend EVEN MORE if you have disc-based media you wish to use on any of your apple computers (whether it be mini, iMac or macbook variants) I don't understand it, and if im gonna be shelling out $2,000 for a laptop, I can get more bang for my buck by going with a windows setup, which is what I did when I bought my Asus. You're paying for the brand name, 'bragging rights' (as if anyone gives a crap you own a mac ) and the OS. Quote
ridwan sameer Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 It's just because... It's branded AppleApple has a way of making everything expensive.I dont like apple This is totally biasedHaha Quote
andy103 Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I actually noticed that as well since I am currently a mostly Mac user. I feel that you are mostly paying for the Apple brand name more than anything else. I have actually been looking around for a new laptop here in a couple months and I found it was the same thing with Alienware. While I found computers that actually had better specs than the laptops from Alienware I was looking at, the Alienware was far more expensive, simply because it was probably an Alienware computer. enim Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 With the availability of freeware (do people still use that term?) out there, you don't even have to worry about it. The only thing I have paid for on my mac was the Adobe suite, after I used it for a while and made money with it. Everything else is free. Whatever you need to do, almost guaranteed there is a free (or built in) way to do it. As an example: I just set up some automated backups, but wanted them of specific folders. I was goign to buy Carbon Copy Cloner, but just taught myself rsync instead. Quote

While I know there are other things to do on a Linux machine, it is very limited compared to windows and mac. What I would do OP is buy a Mac and put Windows on it. Quote
xbrix Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Even though ther are tons of other products out there that are way better, I think that Apple cost more, just because of the name. IF so many other people wouldn't brag about how they have Apple, they would cost less. Quote

I don't know, but maybe they spend a fortune on marketing or Hollywood advertisement deals that's why they cost so much. Quote
Kaushik Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 It is the brand image that Apple has in the market and also technology wise, it is good. Performance wise, it is better than most of its competitors and so it has acquired a good brand image for itself in the market. Quote
mcnasci24 Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 To put it simply, the price of a product with the Apple logo on it has an added value because of is the ecosystem that it provides its customers. Users, especially those who seek technology for itsday to day use and not at a professional and demanding level, need help with certain products and services. Apple's customer service is there 24/7, providing guidance to every small detail. Just for that, the cost of products and applications are more elevated in iOS. Quote

One is quality and another is popularity and well known products. You buy all these. iOS is just great so the price is high Quote
Martinsx Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Seriously, the cost of iOS devices is still the reason why I'm yet to purchase any Apple products. In as much as their products are with good quality and features, it's simply too expensive for me to spend on. Quote
NikSuks Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 I bought iOS based smartphone. Software wise, it is miles better than Android. Apps are also better and there are no "bad" apps as there are in google store. That is why the apps are more expensive. They are better than android ones. But I think that hardware wise iPhones are not so great as some high-end Android base smartphones are. Quote
theresajane Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 Well, I have to agree with the above mentioned comments. It's all about the brand and you pay more because of its trademark. Quote
