$1 hosting

I'd stay away from free/incredibly cheap hosting like $1-$3 hosting plans. It comes down to getting what you pay for, in all honesty.  I would stay away from super cheap hosts. The support is probably awful. If you want affordable, good  shared hosting, check out HawkHost. :) The support is great and their servers are incredibly reliable. :)

I think this spoiler gives you the best insight into things too good to be true:

The way these companies make there money is by selling it at a very low cost  providing very cheap support and generally low costs all around. Think of it like a like a budget hotel. They don't do anything special but provide the very basic of accommodation.

If you did go with a very cheap host then you might find:

  • Very limited tech support. (Cheap Host = Cheap Staff = Less experienced to deal with your problems)
  • Very limited resources. (The less they can give you for that $1 they will. Limit the number of email accounts, sub domaines, SQL Databases...)
  • Very limited uptime. (I'm not saying it's going to go down every day for 4 hours but they aren't going to be providing you with the security that websites require to keep the uptime)

If you really want to get behind a project (or if you think web hosting is going to be a thing for a long time) look into getting a Multiple Website Hosting Account. These hosting packages allow you to host many different websites all with the same account.

Most websites actually allow you to host multiple websites and buying a hosting package for a longer time (IE: longer then a month) then you end up saving a lot of money.

x10Premium (for example) has 3 plans:

  • $142.20 for 3 years (Working out at $3.95 a month)
  • $118.80 for 2 years (Working out at $4.95 a month)
  • $71.40 for 1 year (Working out as $5.95 a month)
  • $6.95 for a month

If your into websites for a living or pleasure then spending that extra $30 for a year of hosting then surely it's going to be worth it? Even better if a website outgrows your hosting package then you can move it on without having to do the messy 'I signed up for a 12 month contract but don't need it because my site is too big' because your other websites just gain the space.

Try this topic if your a bit unsure on about the technical side.

The more you buy the cheaper it will be.

Think of it like a boss. If you know a customer comes in and only buys one month at a time there is no guarantee that they will come next month.

No; but as customers we should use it to our advantage instead of disadvantage.

Why should we pay $10 a month for 12 months when we can pay $100 for 12 months saving us 2 months rent. (These numbers are just easy numbers to use).

This feedback was awesome! thanks a ton!! I did a bunch of more research early this morning and it looks like the priority of cheap web hosting services are to try and "up sell you" to the next hosting package.... I'm going to check out hawkhosting as well. I'll post back with my decision and let you all know how it went. Thanks a ton!

Upselling is a big part of any business. You will always find that want to sell you a little bit more. The essayist one is normally buy a domaine name with the package.

In my humble experience, the only aspect of hosting that has been missing for me were the resources; great tech support, and practically everything else a few hosts I have meandered between still come along as part of the cheap package. You are given less leeway with stressing their systems on shared hosting compared to those who pay for a more expensive shared plan, however, but then I have switched to fixed, monthly transfer and disk space rates with some of the hosts I am with, so this is no longer an issue for me for some of my smaller websites.

I can not commit my business to a $1 hosting plan. The common errors you get with this company is server overloads all the time. They tend to host a lot of companies which translates to server overloads and other errors which will let down your business operations. I would rather spent $7 on a hosting plan but be sure that my site is secure and will always be online.

When I was running my own website I used FreeHostia.com. They had decent customer service and their basic plan was free. I had to upgrade because I needed some more features, like ecommerce support. The upgrade was cheap, as well. I had no complaints about the company, I just decided to not renew my domain name at the time, so I let the website expire too. If I was looking for something cheap and reliable I'd definitely consider them, as an option, again.

You can get hosting with a more reliable company such as Bluehost for less than $5 per month, plus they include a free domain for the first year. I personally wouldn't take any chances for anything cheaper than that, particularly when it comes to uptime, support and overall features. $50-$60 per year is not much at all.

There are lots of hosts popping up that are just resellers and affiliates for larger companies - they are more or less fake store fronts and once they get your sale, you are passed along to the actual web host. Plus those bargain packages almost always have hidden fees baked into the fine print, especially when it comes time for renewal. In many cases, the 2nd year is probably much more expensive, and on top of that, they will auto renew you months before your hosting plan expires, causing a large charge to hit your cards when you don't expect it.

$1 hosting always some strings attached. I do not think any company will freely offer to allow you to use their expensive servers for only $1 per month. Most companies that are reputable in the hosting business the minimum they can go is $5 peer month.

Godaddy has similar prices when you catch it on sale. Right now, their deluxe hosting which allows unlimited number of websites...is only $4.49 a month. Keep in mind that the price could go up after your contract is up....but you could purchase it for only one year or for as many as 5 years at a time if you want:

Just remember that you get what you pay for, if your going to run $1 hosting do not expect any kind of reliability. Matter of fact that goes for shared hosting in general unless your website has almost zero traffic you are going to have problems with shared hosting. I have a big shared hosting plan and it costs me $19.99 a month and its still not enough! I am running into all kinds of problems the only real solution is a VPS or a dedicated server.

I am saving to move to a new apartment next year, but I am also slowly buying parts to build my own server. And after I move into my apartment I am going to colocate the server. And then I will have enough processing power for some time to come because I plan on building a pretty beefy server.

I had not tried godaddy.com I just see their ads on tv a lot. I think they have web hosting now for cpanel costing only $3.49/month. I have seen webhostgator and I have not used their service so I do not know how good their web hosting service is.

Does anyone here use Godaddy? I've used them for over five years and have never had any problems with the service although I really hate their backend website. Its horrible and some parts seem to overlap others in the most annoying ways.

Godaddy is a little on the expensive side but they have always been reliable in my book.
