Dyme
Hey guys! I'm new here and I figured that I'd see what distros you all like the best. Personally, I have always used a debian based distro when it comes to linux. My current setup is Debian Squeeze with XFCE installed as the desktop environment. I like it becuase it's superfast on my old PC, and there's little to no bloatware. It's also a great distro to try out if you're new to linux. You'll learn a lot, but you won't be overwhelmed as if you dove right into Arch or BSD. So what's your favorite distro at the moment or what are you currently using? Victor Leigh
Debian Squeeze with XFCE is fast. However if you want something faster, you should try Puppy Linux. I am using Lucid Lupu which is based on Ubuntu. The desktop environment is JWM. It's not the smallest distro but very much on the lightweight end of the scale. Total startup size less than 150Mb. You can run it without any problems from a usb stick. The whole system loads up into ram at boot.

I've heard a few friends of mine talk about Puppy Linux before although I never really looked into it myself. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be sure to try it out! DarkGizmo
Xubuntu and Mint are my favorites. I hate the direction Ubuntu has taken so I switched to Xubuntu and I also like Mint, when it works with my system.

Quiver
My favourite desktop distro is Ubuntu by far. It's the most user friendly of the Linux OSes. But for servers I would always use CentOS.
Victor Leigh
My old laptop can only handle a distro built on a 2.xxx kernel, so I am not able to try the latest distro from Ubuntu. I heard quite a bit of buzz about the new Unity interface. Are you using that? What do you think?
Marc
Ubuntu or kubuntu for me depending on my mood LOL.
DarkGizmo
I haven't tried Kubuntu in awhile. I might give it a shot sometime.
Marc
I haven't tried Kubuntu in awhile. I might give it a shot sometime. Quite stable these days in comparison to the first time I ever tried it, although that was about a year ago. Only moved back to ubuntu as my audiophile card I could not get to work in kubuntu no matter what I did.
Victor Leigh
I have tried Kubuntu. It's beautiful. Very well-thought-out interface. But it's slow on my old laptop, so I have to give it up. At the moment, my laptop runs best with JWM. I could save a bit more resources by using Icewm but I like my taskbars and desktop icons. Just curious. Is there such thing as a lightweight KDE? webdevuser
As for me, I'm a 12.10 Ubuntu user, and proud of it Some says ubuntu has taken the worst direction ever... but for all I know, they took the best ever. They made a linux based OS available and easy to use for anybody. I mean their unity interface is so user-friendly (which most of the unix users hate) that it can be used by a 3 years old kid. They made a viable alternative to Mac OS/X and Winshit Windows for anybody who owns a computer. I'm happy that Canonical decided to do it! Dyme
Just curious. Is there such thing as a lightweight KDE? Lol lightweight KDE sounds like an oxymoron to me . KDE does look great though. Anybody here use/have used Arch? My friends are pushing me to try it, but I don't see what makes it so much better than Debian or Puppy. dagscot
I've only ever used Ubuntu. I started with version 9 and I've played around with the more recent versions. I to, don't like the direction Ubuntu is going. It looks like they're aiming for an operating system somewhere between OS X and Windows. I appreciate the alternatives posted here and will be checking them out.

CDNeely
I am absolutely fond of Kubuntu. I used to use straight Ubuntu, but I don't like where the Desktop is going. My second favorite has to go to Debian. It's the root for Ubuntu, Kubuntu and all the #buntu distros.
enim
Xubuntu by a long shot. I'm a Mac user and use VMWare Fusion to run Xubuntu for certain things (its my practice MySQL environment, for instance - way faster for that, and easier to set up). Since I wanted something light on processor and ram, XFCE was the way to go. Helps that it is what I'm familiar with, too.
crazycroc
I like Mint a lot which I see is becoming a real favorite of a lot of people moving over from Ubuntu (ugh, Unity) but I think they need to get things together with the separate desktop environments and combine things together into one. inquisitor494
After trying a few distros, I finally settled on Linux Lite. I'm with the OP (and probably everyone else here), no bloatware, fast and simple. Linux Lite gave me just enough to work with, without overloading me. I'm still very new to the Linux world and I am becoming more comfortable as time goes on.
