When is a good time to upgrade from shared hosting to a vps?

Undoubtedly, shared hosting costs less than a vps, both in terms of money and in terms of management resources. However, a vps has certain advantages over a shared hosting, not the least of which is the choice of operating system and control panel.

So, the question is when is a good time to upgrade from shared hosting to a vps? Or should a site remain on shared hosting for as long as it can?

As soon as you can afford it :)

I waited until I had to move years ago and when I finally did there was so much to move it was a pain.

I also found while on shared hosting there were times the site seemed to be under a load when my site was not, leads me to believe they probably oversold.

I see.

Then, from what you have experienced, the use of a shared hosting plan is only until such time when there is enough money to upgrade to a vps. Which also means that if the funds are handy, a new site might as well start on a vps instead of a shared hosting plan. No?

Well, i have believed that as long as your site gets lower than expected visitors, and the resources provided by the shared hosting are able to keep up your site - in terms of delivery, processing, there is not much reason to migrate. If you recall, I had a discussion somewhere that we were coming up with a social media site. Not many shared hosts are willing to share spaces with us, and the ones which are willing - we do not think they would allow us the bandwidth and the diskspace we seek. And we are still searching for options, though the site is now online (under test runs though)

Well from a security standpoint you should get your own VPS as soon as possible. Shared hosting is poses a great risk if your website was targeted. Even if your site is completely secure, the attacker could simple gain access to the server from another site on the same box. From there he could root or symlink in order to do harm to your site. Many web hosts (Especially free ones) use don't have the proper measures in place to prevent this.

It you cost you a fair amount more though, and unless your running a controversial site there's an extremely small list of someone trying to target you. Just something to think about.

The main reason to go to vps is the amount of traffic that your site gets.

If your site is still new and it drives the amount of traffic which doesn't affect the speed of a site or if there are no messages from the server about capacity problem, then there is no need to upgrade your hosting plan. The amount of web traffic to a site determines which hosting plan you should use in my opinion. So don't hurry about upgrading your hosting plan!

To give you an idea, I had a small website back in 2010 that was doing ok (adsense wise) until one day when I started receiving around 25k UV per day. I was not prepared, and since the website was in the flash games niche, the host couldn't handle the traffic and I ended up losing a lot of visitors and money. Since then I bought not one but multiple vps major countries around the world (to reduce load times as much as possible) and things are looking good. Also, a vps is actually not that expensive. If you make $2-3k a month, surely you can afford one. For smaller websites, a $10 a month hosting plan should do just fine.

What it truly depends on is personal preference. The plain and simple answer to your question is this: if you are stressing your shared or metered hosting with the traffic you are getting, if you are getting any ominous warnings from your website hosting provider, or if you are aiming to establish a prominent, longterm venture, then it would be wise for you to upgrade as soon as you can. You do not have to be making four figures per month to afford a secure VPS. They will cost you anywhere from 10$ per month (at the lowest level) to 100$ or more (for the highest), but by the time you will need to pay for the higher extremity, you will be able to afford a dedicated server instead, which is far better than Shared and VPS hosting combined.

The moment you see that your website can't sustain a suitable amount of traffic and begins to crush then it's the important indicator stating that it's time to upgrade and move from shared hosting to something more stronger, to be more specific a sufficient in terms of strength vps.

It depends on how much traffic you expect your sites to receive. If you plan on growing you traffic and getting thousands of daily visitors, it's best to set everything up on a VPS right from the start. VPS hosting isn't expensive and having everything on your own server will save you the trouble of moving your sites from a shared host later on.
