SEO value of a thread title

Recommended Posts

In a blog, the article title has got SEO value. For that reason, choosing a good title is useful when making a blog post.

In the case of a forum, the value of a thread title is not exactly clear. I have asked some people about this and the answers are mixed. The real reason I am asking this here is that, sometimes, I see very cryptic thread titles. Not here. Elsewhere.

So, what do you think? Is there any SEO value in a thread title? If so, what can be done to improve thread titles so that they will be more useful for the purpose of SEO?

Yes the thread title is definitely a factor.  The way it's tagged is how the SERP know what it's about.

The tags help as well, but don't think they carry as much weight.

I see.

Since the thread titles and tags have some value, is there any way that we can motivate our members to write good thread titles and put tags on their posts? Perhaps if you have a list of keywords which you would like this forum to be ranked for, then we can try to make threads with titles containing the keywords.

For thread titles:

Lead by example would be the best practice as well as having 'Your thread must have an appropriate title' in the rules.

For tags:

I think vB has the suggested tags feature? Although honestly I think in the last year or so the only person to tag threads has been Nathan across most of the websites I visit.

Yeah, adding tags really shouldn't be up to the forum member and I hate when owners force that. If you really want tags and people aren't doing it on their own, then just add them yourself.

As for titles, I will occasionally change those if someone makes a title like "Click here" or "You have to look here!!" I hate titles like that. Otherwise, I don't worry too too much about it.

I agree it is important not only to give an interesting topic but also optimized. The reason we have forums is to help in getting answers and they might just appear in search engines. This will link back to the forum meaning more traffic. Am sure admin likes this more traffic.

Yeah hard to get people to pay attention and add them.

What I tend to do is if I notice I will edit and add the tags myself.

I think I'm one of those who don't add tags to posts.  But promise I will from now on.

After reading this topic,  how I wish I have this option in my forum too.  :twitch:
