How did you get started designing?

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in finding out how a lot of you guys got inspiration to start graphic designing. I know for me, when I made my first blog I didn't want any mediocre graphics because that tends to turn people away and it makes you look less professional or "serious" about what your promoting. I watched countless videos on YouTube and they have actually paid off getting me a few good graphic design gigs.

If what you mean by designing is website designing then I can't say that I have really started yet. What I have actually done so far is just to modify, very slightly, the templates which are available freely.

If what you mean by designing is graphics designing then I have started quite some time back. Something like three decades ago. It started as a challenge to do design work without using Photoshop. On a PC.

I had trouble transferring my images from the camera to various social websites or galleries online. That's when I got interested in reducing file-sizes and then cropping images to make them look good before uploading them. Now, I've been sucked in to photo editing and posting on sites like flickr.

LOL! Long story
I first joined this free hosting website that had a graphic section that i took a liking to. Started learning from there, following tutorials and whatnot. After that it was all trial and error.. I offered my services free which in turn helped me improve my work through practice

I've actually have tried over and over again but I just really suck at anything artistic in general. Definitely more strong in the coding department, so I'm pretty content on sticking with that.

Graphic design has always impressed me; Maybe I'll go at it one more time. :P

You should. When I first got started I wasn't very good at all. As a matter of fact, I sucked, haha. The drive to make my goals and visions that I saw in my head drove me to achieve them. I think everyone has a specific style and thats the hardest part finding out what yours is. I think if you find your lane you'll start getting into it. There are many styles of design, you just have to find the one that fits you.

I was told I was quite good at drawing and had an eye for color and matching appropriate colors and designs. It's pretty hard to make any money selling real life paintings unless your a prodigy, which I'm not. So I was refereed to designing online for people and I found it fun and profitable.

I actually got interested in it back in high school and signed up for a graphics arts class. The class was horrible but I still liked making art with the computer. Now I am studying animation and visual effects and do almost all of my art on the computer.

At first designing isn't really my thing but ever since my real passion is drawing, not designing. But because of my passion, I got interested also in designing since they are so much related to each other. So now, I do both of them and enhancing these skills will want me more to pursue my passion.

If you can't attend any live workshop or seminars on how to start and improve your graphic design business then I strongly recommend that you stick with learning online through YouTube videos. If you are one that grasps things quickly, I'm sure you will master anything that you need on graphic designing.

Good luck mate.

I started by making business cards and flyers for myself and my friends in the 90's using a user friendly software called Print Master Gold and later on I started doing logos, banners and any kind of graphics using different softwares.  It's a continuous learning process, now I'm learning how to make infographics.
