Victor Leigh
Myself, I always pay for my hosting on a monthly basis. Even when there is a discount for paying by the year. That's mainly because I have very little faith in the long-term prospects of anything in cyber space and I like to keep my options open. However I do know that some people would pay for a whole year's worth of hosting. How about you? And why do you choose your period of payment? inspirASIAN
I used to go for the monthly payment option if it's available—well actually the hosting company MUST have a monthly payment option. I have this habit of bunny hopping like a rabbit through different hosts every few months since either a particular hosting company and their promised uptime percentage doesn't live up to my expectations or their support is simply lacking, enough to categorise their response on the same level as automated bot replies. However, I think I finally found the ideal host for me and after a few more months I might just opt for the yearly payment option. Linode is a pretty good host to have and I just realised that a lot of my friends have been using their service for years. That's mainly because I have very little faith in the long-term prospects of anything in cyber space and I like to keep my options open. Ha... that's true. After trying out many different hosts it sort of taught me to not even consider going for the yearly payment option of any hosts since it's unlikely for me to even last for half a year as a customer of their service. Forget discounted promos, you wouldn't be able to use the service you paid for once you switch hosts due to poor service so there goes your moolah. You can't even pat yourself in the back and say "well.. at least they gave me a discount!" Edited January 15, 2013 by inspirASIAN
KMRock
I have always done monthly, though I have been tempted by the yearly options before with my forum projects.
Victor Leigh
There are actually some hosts which do not have any monthly options, especially for their low-end plans. From my experience, I have only come across a shared hosting provider that allows its clients to pay by the month for the smallest plan, at 1usd per month. I have just heard a sad story from a friend who was using a very good service run by a one-man show. Until the company got sold. And his troubles began. Now if he had paid for a full year's hosting, then he's really out of luck.
BarryLejieg
I make this decision based on the project I am working on. It depends if the project I am working on it's risky, if so, I usually pay on a monthly basis, but for my already established projects I usually choose to pay in annual terms. This again depends on the amount of the money that I have to pay, if it costs to much I just go with the monthly payments, no matter the project. Jessi
I usually pay by the month or by every 3 months. I have done 6 months at a time before and it worked out fine, but I'm really not saving that much money by paying in large chunks. There's a discount, but it's very nominal compared to the risk of possibly needing to switch hosting during that year.
DarkGizmo
I pay monthly. Mainly because if the host bellies up, i'm not tied in for an extended period of time and can just leave at the end of the month and go elsewhere. Thankfully Hawk hasn't needed that since I signed up with them in October of 2010. Been a very satisfied customer. This year will be 3 years. KMRock
To some degree it depends on how you think your site will go as well I think, well for me anyway.
Thomas
I pay normally on a 3-6 month basis. As cheap as monthly might be I have to force myself to get into a project and give it time to prospect into a fully grown project. Yearly is a little bit to much as a whole year? But paying the $20-30 for a few months gives me faith that it might pick up.
Victor Leigh
Would it come down to the actual amount to be paid? Let's say it's just 10usd for the whole year's hosting. Would you pay for the whole year then?

Would you pay for the whole year then?Oh hell no. That's either a bad off-shore host or something's up. I would never come to pay 10$ for a year of hosting since I couldn't get myself to believe that's going to be any decent of a host. No offence intended if there's any hosting provider here that offers this kind of amount for a year of hosting, but let's be honest. Unless a host is desperate for customers, there's no other reason to 'sell' your quality hosting services for such a cheap price. This is a business, you're not a charity firm and your customer thinks the same. Edited January 17, 2013 by inspirASIAN
Zerth
Nah, I agree with you. I'd prefer to just pay monthly because a year is way too long for me. If I pay monthly, if I don't like it, or the speed isn't good enough I can change easily.
johnthomas1433
I rather go for the monthly basis. I know that yearly payment does get us more discounts, but if I have any problem with a host, monthly payments make it easier for me to shift. If I had done yearly payments at that time, I shall probably be losing money.
carlalexander
I would say paying monthly is not only safe but also very reliable in case the hosting company starts to act up or traffic suddenly becomes unbearable (extremely high for your current host to handle) in your site, you might need to switch hosts. It makes you less of a slave to the hosting company
kingpost
Hmm.. But I prefer Yearly payments. Because monthly payments isn't safe if you want to on a big site . But for starting any site you can choose monthly payments. Because you can change it to yearly any time. So If you are creating new site then monthly is ok, but when you've became Large then you should need to buy Yearly Payment service. Best of luck! blackbagel
I pay with the yearly plan because of the fact that it's cheaper for a long term use. Also the cheaper plans I use usually don't have a monthly plan so that really rules out most options for me.
elledesign
Although I now have hosting with a big company that most likely won't go out of business anytime soon, I definitely prefer to pay monthly. It's just easier to pay in small chunks, rather than all at once - and somehow it seems less painless paying $10 a month instead of $120 a year. I previously used a hosting provider that suddenly went belly-up, with no forwarding address or information as to what just happened to my site (which disappeared!), so I can definitely understand the "they might go out of business" worry. justusforus
I usually try to use a reputable company and pay 6 months at a time. Not for the discount but because it's easier for me to remember and deal with.
NicheGuy
I have quite a few sites so the yearly purchase for hosting service saves me lots of money. In addition, if I'm certain my sites will continue because they interest me, bring relevant traffic and are easy to maintain i also purchase the domains out five years. I use the privacy feature on my sites so this also save plenty of dough in the long-term.
andrewt
I recently got a good discount at a hosting company on Cyber Monday, and pay only half their normal price for life, which is only $3.5 with dedicated ip per month. I chose to pay monthly with automatic rebilling because it is more convenient for me this way, and also the discount when paying for a full year wasn't that great. Hope this helps! xbrix
I prefer to pay monthly. I don't like paying yearly because what if my page doesn't get any views and I still have 6 months? That'll just be a waste of my time and money. That's why I like to pay in month increments because if I see that my page isn't going anywhere, I'll be able to stop paying. devilishomar
I prefer yearly payments, especially when I'm buying from a well established company. It's just more easier to manage and you don't have the pressure of forgetting to pay your dues every month. Despite some people forgetting to renew their domain even when on a yearly payment, I think it's the best option for me. It's cheaper as well. mikelouis
I prefer paying monthly because you can never know about the hosting company can decide to go under and also I can decide to change from one company to another if their services are not great. I know there is a discount but it is not enough to make me pay for a whole year subscription.
OhioTom76
I generally pay yearly because I've been using the same host for a number of years and already know what to expect from them. Plus if I can get a discount for paying the year in full, why not. I don't like having a bunch of recurring monthly payments scheduled because when it comes time for me to switch banks or switch a credit card, if you miss some of them, it can cause mayhem with bounced charges and insufficient funds fees. I've been through that mess a number of times, never again.
mikelouis
Even though it is cheap to buy a yearly plan, it is better to buy a monthly plan. I would go for a yearly plan if am hosting a business which is already established will not fail any time soon. Other than that, I will stick to monthly plan.
