The Future Of Social Media?

Social Media sites can be very popular now but as more smartphones apps are developed which serve the same function as social media sites, is there a possibility that we will see a decline in the popularity of social media sites?

 

Personally I think that soon rather than later as more marketers flood social media sites with marketing content, fewer people will be inclined to visit their favorite sites if most of the stuff they'll see is marketing material. So unless online marketers are stopped, they'll be the death of social media as we know it.

I agree in that social media, specifically Facebook will decline if it is flooded with marketing but I don't think social media as a whole will die. Much like Myspace, when a more superior social media site arises Facebook could see a sharp decline but it won't die (disappear forever). I think as long as marketing content isn't in our faces and discretely placed, Facebook will have no problem staying on the pedestal of social media sites.

Twitter is becoming super flooded with spam and marketers. I can see it going down the drain over the next few years. Facebook however, has been making it tougher for marketers. They are using a different system where businesses that want to advertise need to spend more money to reach all of their fans and targets. I believe Facebook will stay up for quite a long time. Even Google+ does not seem to be able to knock Facebook one bit.

I think some social media sites will decline, but not all. Some have taken the necessary precautions while it is a little to late for many others.

Social media is a fad like everything else. Look at how busy forums were at the birth of the internet. You could throw a forum up and overnight you would have 50 members. Now now look you practically have to beg people to post on forums. The same thing is going to happen to social media websites. They are cool now and in 5+ years they are going to be yesterdays news.

Interesting point of view Nathan considering you're literally on the inside as it were.Got a question to ask you as a follow up to this. If you're seeing a decline in Facebook activity from your clients and reps, are they going elsewhere, or just giving up on these systems altogether?

I see everyone's point and I would not be surprised that Facebook would have a decline. I have not been on there in weeks except to see any new notifications. I think that social media is not as active as it should anymore.

Facebook and Twitter are declining, there's no doubt about that. The question is just, what will be the next big thing? I'm not quite sure if it will be a different social media site, with some features both FB and Twitter don't have, or something completely different, but I'm sure there will be something after the age of Facebook and Twitter. Maybe Google+ goes big, who knows, but I actually doubt it since a lot of people got mad at Google for forcing them to combine their Google+ accounts with YouTube.

Honestly it's a bit of a wonder that Google+ hasn't blown up the way every other Google product has. Well admittedly, not all of the Google products have blown up I suppose, but the majority of their products dominate their respective markets. Google+ however just...sits there, doing nothing.

I think that in a couple of years one of two things will happen:

1. Facebook/Twitter/etc will continue to die off, and be replaced with something new as a result of some fad.
2. The spammers will realize how little they are gaining from constantly barraging social media, and will cease to spam Facebook and other social media sites due to finding a better way to advertise. (what that may be, I don't know.) This will give new life to social media sites that are already in existence.

It may also be for the better that we get some new social media sites, so that certain trends/fads don't get out of hand. (We don't need any more Farmville copies.)

I think in the future, "social media" can be redefined, what with the rise in virtual reality and whatnot. Take forums for example, they used to be HUGE a while back, but now everyone's on Instagram and Facebook and sites like that. I think the need to connect with others will always be there, the means is what's going to change

I do not think social media will ever die out. I do believe certain social media platforms will. I believe there will always be a popular social media, but like MySpace, one will die out and another will always take its place.

Totally agree. I'm curious as to what the next "big thing" is going to be. Facebook is going to either mess up and lose peoples trust, some new platform will hit a home run, or some other possibility that my underdeveloped brain can't comprehend

Yes there might be a decline. Because as time goes by many other social media sites and platforms are being made. Giving competition to those sites already been established. This is because people always want to try new things. Nevertheless, social media as whole will never die out.

I don't think social media will die sooner or later. I do agree that marketing stuff is flooding all over social media sites, but as I look in to it some users especially teenagers doesn't really bother that much. In this generation where Narcissism and popularity is a trend, most people just love to flaunt themselves to the general public that they spend at least half of their day posting and smashing like/retweet buttons. I mean, it's a little bit nostalgic because what happened to Friendster which was loaded by games and advertisements killed the entire website making way for its competitor Facebook. However, I don't think what happened to Friendster will also happen to Facebook and social media in general because as long as there's smartphones and internet connection, the people in this generation will just continue to use social media even if ads or marketing flood all over the website.

Since we are living in the world full of uncertain I think  there will be a future that some of the social media we have and currently using nowadays will have or facing the decline visit on the site. We can say that some social media sites are have their season peak when they will be on the #1 and some will be on the lower rank. Especially  if some of the marketers use the social media with some flooded advertisements that seems to be no appeal for the viewer or user of the site.

It's hard to imagine a world without social media, so I don't really agree. Recently we saw Facebook change it's algorithm so that you mostly receive messages from your family and friends. This was all in reaction to the role it played in the United States of America Presidential election. So the same way Google keeps changing its algorithm is the same I think these social media sites will begging to behave. To retain their audience,they will begin to protect them from advertisements and markets. Nothing to worry about!
