I've been trying to get my own name as my domain name for years. A lot of companies offer "back ordering" options that you can use to back order the name that you want. Has anyone used any of these services to a Domain Registrar? Do they work? What happens if the person simply reorders their name at the end of the term?

It works if the domain expires from whoever currently owns it.  Also if you're doing this on godaddy and someone else is using the service at another registrar there is a chance they will get it first.

Why is that? Godaddy doesn't get preference on that kind of deals? I would have think otherwise, being Godaddy a big name registrar and all.

If Godaddy isn't a good registrar for that kind of operations, which one do you recommend?

That would be a type of monopoly.  They all get a chance at it, just depends on how their software is setup and how often it checks.

I have used some of them, and have actually obtained a domain that way. It works, but only if the current registrant does not renew, and it is past the redemption period.

Your old name is being reserved for a while, unless you obviously the delay the payment for too long. That's how it works in theory, because I always pay for my website in time.
