I'm really interested on how to monetize a website, can some one briefly discuss how do websites earn? And if your are earning by this method, is it taxable? Also in order to earn thru your website, do need some investing?  Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Well, you have to invest in the site development, design, etc. needed to create your website, and if you want to be successful, you also have to invest in a good infrastructure so that your website won't experience crashes as more and more people visit your site. You also need to decide what type of website you want but generally, I think the main portion of a website's revenue (provided that it's not being used to sell products or services) is through ad revenue.

How can it earn?

  • Adsense, Chitika, etc. ads
  • guest posts
  • banner ad spots
  • special club membership
  • a signature displayed to guests
  • directory listings
  • boosted posts
  • better placed directory listings
  • donations

Can anyone think of other ideas?

It usually takes some money to make money. Luckily things like web hosting are not very expensive. The web design part, unless you can do it yourself, can get quite expensive though. So you will need to invest both money and time for this to work.

Yes, in most jurisdictions, it would be taxable income. Most jurisdictions would consider this income as "business income" and would be taxed as such.

In the U.S., reporting business income is easy to do, and as far as income tax is concerned, you are only taxed on your profits (after your expenses). Other countries may have different rules surrounding this. Either way, you probably want to look up the taxing rules where you live.

I was about to comment on the methods I know, and then I saw this. It pretty much sums them all up.

there are three ways a website is earning, first is to value the ads, cost per click(or how much its worth when someone clicks on it). Cost per impression(how much its worth just appearing on a site) or by time(meaning you pay a set amount for an ad to run a site).

There are so many ways we can earn from having a site provided we can have good amount of traffic. One can use Google AdSense or any other good ad network like media.net. Selling ads space on the site, advertising on the site for sellers and companies. You can promote affiliate links on your site and could even ask for donations too.

You need to have some solid content in your site first. Merely having images and just a few lines of content would not qualify the site for monetization. You can use Google adsense if you have good content and consistent visitors. Build up content and monitor your visitor count. Market your site well on social media and other free channels.

I guess it is only Adsense that I know how a website can earn. Before the popularity of Facebook I remember that some websites were dependent on donations to cover the overhead expenses. But now I guess there are many ways for the website to earn as stated in the comments above. However Adsense is still the best means of monetization because it is stable and legitimate considering that it is owned by Google.

There are so many different ways to earn money from the website. Examples: Adsense, Adwords, SEO, Product based websites, Affiliate marketing and so on. But to earn well, you should go for Google Adsense.  You'll get money for placing advertisements on your blog/website while the advertiser gets the audience for which he pays Google and then after cutting the certain percentage of commission it pays you for each click done on your page. With doing Google Adsense, People earn thousands of rupees in a month.
