Hi guys! I was just curious. If I would have my own site, how will I be able to make money out of it? I mean, besides the content that I will put (how you can earn online), how come that these sites earn every month? Because I have seen a site that you will buy a particular website for $2k and then the monthly earning of that site is 700$. How come? Any suggestions? I'm becoming more curious about this. Thank you in advance for all those who share their ideas.

It's a tough road and takes time.  You need traffic to monetize and that doesn't happen overnight.  Most people give up early on sites and never make it over the hump.

This site for example doesn't make a dime, but that's not the point of it.  It's an extension of my web development company so it's a marketing/advertising expense.

Getting traffic can be difficult depending on what area you decide to target.  Early on it's much easier if you target a niche that isn't very competitive.  This way you'll quickly start showing up on the first page of Google for that search result.  Seeing that is rewarding and helps keep you motivated.  If you want to go into higher competitive areas you better have an advertising/marketing budget set aside, it's still possible to break in but you really need to put in a LOT more time, effort, and money.

For example back in 2012 I saw a video concept of a new video game that was going to be crowdfunded.  It really interested me so the same day I bought a domain and put a forum up for that game.  It was super niche as the game had not even started development or crowdfunding at this point, just a video, but backed by some big names.  Within a week the forum exploded and has grown ever sense into the largest fan-site/community for the game.

There are many ways to make money with a website, and deciding what kind of website and how you will monetize it are part of the planning.

Some very common ways to earn money on a website include:

  • Advertising revenue (Google AdSense, selling ads yourself, etc.).
  • Affiliate marketing (getting a commission when someone buys a product or service from someone else).
  • Selling a product or service on your website.

But all of these require a website that people want to visit and can find.

And, you mentioned something about buying a website for $2000 that makes $700 per month. Be careful with this. Are they telling you that the site currently makes $700 per month, or are they telling you that the website has a potential to make $700 a month? And you have to ask yourself "if the website is making $700 a month, why are they selling it for $2000" because in 3 months they would have earned $2100 for the site. So just be careful if you plan on buying a website. Make sure you are getting what you think you are getting. Sometimes you can get a great deal, but other times you might get scammed. So be careful.

I just watched it from youtube that this specific site has been running for 7 years and they're selling it for I think $2k and you earn $700 per month but he also said that to be careful about buying these sites. Up for you to invest on something that you can lose it as well. But there are sites that are as low as 5$.

Unless the owner is selling it because he needs urgent cash or is retiring or some other urgent reason, it's not very smart to sell something for such a low price when it's bringing in cash. While it is certainly true that there are good deals out there, there are also a lot more scams. Just make sure you do your due diligence before purchasing.

For example, ask:

  • Why are they selling?
  • Is there proof that their website is making money?
  • How much does it cost to run the website?
  • Are there any issues with copyright claims?
  • Are there any trademark issues?
  • Are there any other legal issues related to the website?
  • Is the content of the website unique?
  • Will you be able to move the site to your own server?
  • Does the site need improvements, especially in the area of security?
  • Is there a safe way to transfer the money so that they don't take the money and run, leaving you with nothing?
  • Etc. etc.

Buying a profitable website can be very lucrative, but you need to make sure you are really buying a profitable website (as in already profitable, and not "someday might be" profitable). So just be careful and do your research before handing over any money.

Now this is information. I learned a lot. Thanks to you buddy! Good times!

Another question you should ask, especially if the website is selling something, is:

  • How much are they spending on advertising to produce the revenue?
  • How many customers return their purchases? What percentage?
  • Are customers complaining about the product or service? Are they complaining about customer service?
  • What reputation does the website have?

Because if the website is making $700 a month in revenue, perhaps they are spending $600 a month on ads to produce those sales, plus another $100 for web hosting, maintenance, and other expenses.

So make sure you get all the numbers and understand how they are making money, and what it costs to make that money.

There are quite a lot of ways that you can make money from having your very own website. The most obvious way will, of course, be by having and selling advertisements on your site. You can do this by either signing up for a program like Google Adsense which will allow you to automatically have different advertisements across your whole site or by manually selling and adding advertisements to your site.

You could also make money by taking advantage of affiliate marketing which is what I am doing right now with my blog. Basically all you have to do is recommend certain products, services and programs to users and the owners of that product, service or program will pay you a tiny commision for every user you refer to their site.

That's a deal cause normally a website making $700 a month would be $7000 - and that's due to the fact that you normally have to pay 10X the possible monthly income.  Anyway, regarding what you mentioned, that's not only a deal - but a super-deal. :ahappy:  If you don't mind me asking, "Are you going to take it?".

On 2nd thought, look at traffic sources.  It can be faked.  Don't get burned.

To be fair, if a site is making $700 a month then it seems a bit suspicious that they would want to sell it really. Either the costs of running the business are way too high and thus they are not making a proper profit or there is something suspicious going on with the website that they want to get rid of it. They could easily make that $2000 in a few months if they are making $700 a month so it seems weird that they would want to get rid of it really. Plus, like you said, statistics can be faked so I would definitely be careful if the original poster wants to go ahead and buy the web host for $2000.

Making a website profitable is definitely not a walk in the park;it requires determination and a knowledge of the necessary skills to bring in the much needed traffic.

Lots of folks sell dead ponies to unsuspecting people on the Internet, so I suggest you do a thorough research before parting with your hard earned dollars.

If you follow your passion and build up a website in the end it will become worth all the trouble.

I also want to learn how to earn in this site. I'm willing to learn and absorb some knowledgeable ideas. I'm a newbie in freelancing career and hoping to be a good one someday.

If you have a sufficient amount of traffic then I'd suggest you to get some ads running, presumably from a Google AdSense service. That's one of the best solutions out there to earn from web hosting, with the exception of donation and selling something.

We all know that the basis of all web sites is web hosting.

it helps us attract visitors;
it creates the databases which are indispensable for the online business owners;
it allows the business to deliver ideas, products, and services;
it displays what we are desperately trying to get across;
it allows us to survive in the cutthroat internet world.

While these are all important qualities that come with web hosting, there are many other opportunities.

You may make a lot of money by writing articles for websites. Learn about your area of interest and create a few short articles to post on your website. Make it a practise to update your blog on a regular basis. Nowadays, blogs earn a lot of money. Choose a niche (niche = a certain topic to focus on) and promote it on social media networks. If your material is unique and engaging, users will flock to your website on a frequent basis.
