dullian Posted January 7, 2019 Posted January 7, 2019 (edited) Hello. I'm interested in setting up my first website. I'd like to know what steps I should follow. I've learned some HTML if that helps a little. I want something free so I can get the ropes of how to administer a site. I'm fine if it's something like a blog. What are your tips? Thanks. achikeziah Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 The first thing you need to do before anything else is to get yourself a domain name. This is the name you want to give to your website. For example, the domain name of the website you're reading is "thesitewizard.com". To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. Getting a name does not get you a website or anything like that. It's just a name. It's sort of like registering a business name in the brick-and-mortar world; having that business name does not mean that you also have the shop premises to go with it. Detailed information on getting a good domain name can be found in the article Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name. After you read that, you will need to know the steps to registering a domain name and the things you need to look out for when registering. You can find a detailed guide in the article How to Register a Domain Name.It may also be wise to take a look at some of the Important Precautions to Take When Buying a Domain Name, just so that you don't commit the same mistakes that some newcomers make when buying a domain name. achikeziah Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 To make a website, first start by making a web page. Your website will probably contain several Web pages, linked together. A Web page is similar to a printed page, in that it can contain text and images. However there are some important differences between a Web page and a printed page. For one thing, a Web page can be of any length, from just a few words to several screenfuls of content. To view a long Web page, you simply scroll down in your browser. A Web page can also contain links to other Web pages and websites. This ability to link to other content really makes the Web useful. Quote
faithjose822 Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 First design your website. Get inspired. Look at websites with great designs and think about why they're great designs. It usually comes down to the information, resources, links, and pages being laid out in a way that is easy to see and use. To get ideas about how to design your own site, look at sites which do similar things to get ideas about where you should put different types of content. Stay realistic to your skills. Ease of access is the most important thing. If you don't have a certain piece of information easily visible, make sure that getting to that information is very logical. Generally the simpler the design, the fewer the pages, the better. Quote
faithchristy29 Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 According to wikihow this how how make a website. This wikiHow teaches you how to code a simple text web page with HTML. dullian Posted January 8, 2019 Author Posted January 8, 2019 Thanks for the replies! I thought registering a domain was free, though. I actually was more interested in free options like a blog on Blogger (if that still exists) since it seems the process of setting your blog and making entries looks pretty simple. That's not to say I don't want to learn how to set up a website, though, I just want a simpler way to start sharing my ideas. Quote
diolola456 Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 I think it better to use some website for blogs because it gives ideas about what the world can be in my part, but if you want to a make a newbie website for the first time I think you should try first blogging before that, but if you have broad knowledge on how to build a good website go for it, but if not study first before creating because creating a website is not such that simple you need to have broad knowledge on what site or design can attract customer if the website is e-commerce also if the website is blog what topic could attract people curiosity. achikeziah Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 There are hundreds of different website building platforms and website builders around the market. WordPress, Wix, Joomla, Drupal… Just to name a few. You can also code your website from scratch, but I wouldn’t recommend it on mainly two reasons:It just takes too much time (seriously). Your end result will be mediocre at it’s best… Quote
burgosmichael2407 Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 If you want to start your own website, you should try wix.com. It is free and easy to use. You can try that to learn how to build your own website with your own domain in the future. Quote

astraherondale Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 If you want a convenient option, you can try using website builders such as Weebly and Wix. These are my two favorite ones, and my school organization has been using Weebly for our website for years now. Both are really easy to use and you'll have a functioning site in no time. Quote
achikeziah Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 Find a free online website-building service. There are a lot of options out there; some great, some poor, some cheap, some expensive; so it's worth spending some time comparing features. Most offer limited services for free sites and typically place advertisements on your site. Your website will most likely also be a subdomain of the host site instead of its own site (e.g. yoursite.host.com instead of yoursite.com). Some of the more popular free hosting sites include: Wordpress; great for blogs, small to medium-sized websites of all kinds Drupal; great for medium to large-sized websites Webs Angelfire Google Sites Webnode Wix Zoho Sites Wikia; great for wikis Quote
Bravosi Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Obviously you can Google for help, or even "YouTube" for a better idea. But if you're too lazy you can just use a template offered by free website hosting services. Quote
Alania Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 If you're really up to the challenge to make a website on your own completely, then I suggest you to open a Notepad, and start practising HTML. It might be old and outdated, but it's fun to see what you can create on your own. Quote
Roussptr12 Posted January 18, 2019 Posted January 18, 2019 A website is a special mode via which any business owner can obtain the attention of potential clients and this is why it is highly suggested to hire an expert web design team. Even I hired the most renowned Child Care Website Design company and the final design offered by them was absolutely amazing. Quote
Sohani30 Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 Hello @kilobyte, I would like to answer the question Create your own portfolio website means to promote yourself. You can add about yourself and what you are working now. Make the best design for your website. See, I'm talking about portfolio not blogging so keep your website small and clean. If someone impressed by your website he/she can hire you for freelancing and pay you. Quote
