What are the 3 types of user engagement?

Recommended Posts

User engagement is a key element of any website or app. Without engagement, users will quickly lose interest and move on to something else. There are three primary types of real time user engagement: functional, emotional, social. Understanding these different types can help you create a website or app that better engages your users and keeps them coming back for more.

1. Functional Engagement:

Functional engagement involves satisfying user needs and expectations through the ease-of-use and functionality of a website or app. A functional design meets users' basic objectives such as finding information, completing transactions, playing games, etc.

2. Emotional Engagement:

This type of user engagement goes beyond the functional and makes your website or app more than just a means to an end. Instead, it elevates the experience and makes users feel something about their interaction with the site. Emotional engagement might show up in the form of delighting users with unexpected "wow" features that meet their needs and make them smile.

3. Social Engagement:

This type of engagement involves users having fun and collaborating with one another, whether through messaging, games, or other means. Users like to connect with other people and form communities that share interests, opinions, and activities.
