It's really hard to decide between these two. YouTube is much more popular and has more content than vimeo, but personally I like vimeo's layout better. And as you also mentioned I saw a lot of HD videos exclusively vimeo. I have to cast my vote on youtube though.

I voted for Youtube. I think Vimeo has e cleaner design and looks really cool, but Youtube has a lot more to offer content wise and loads a lot better for me. I get a lot of lag when using Vimeo unfortunately. Hopefully that will change in the future.

I've uploaded the same videos on both and find that youtube gets more hits overall but if it's a video about video making, vimeo seems to be more popular. It's a site made for people serious about video rather than just uploading the lastest thing shot on their phone.

Honestly, I love Vimeo... but with Youtube being connected to Google, it would be dumb to not utilize its reach. I'm always shocked at the number of views I get on videos that I just threw together for my kids and so on... It's simply the smart way to go. If I was just using it for hosting, though, and didn't want the reach, I'd choose to use Vimeo.

I think that you have made an important point. Youtube is great but is full of everything, whereas Vimeo is a place that video makers seem to converge.

You're correct in saying you see lots of HD stuff on Vimeo - for a while, they were the only ones that supported high quality 720 or 1080p video. YouTube has it now, though they still compress it I believe. Vimeo's got the "sharp" image that many go after. There are also no ads within the player, unlike YouTube.

Vimeo overall is almost exclusively for high-wuality and more business-like or actual creative works. Most vimeo views are a result of adverts, not their own Vimeo search. For this reason, I'll be sticking with Youtube in order to garner more views, but enjoy the Vimeo uploads from others.

I would opt for YouTube because Vimeo videos take forever to load on my computer, and I know there are people with far worse connections than me! And most people don't even know about Vimeo... they may have come across it once or twice, but I don't think as many people head over to Vimeo to search for something. The community behind YouTube is what makes it the most appealing, as Talk Tech News said. The only thing I seriously dislike about YouTube is its heavy censorship of videos containing any copyrighted material, although Vimeo is quite guilty of this as well. It's the 3rd most popular site on the internet so it makes sense to use it in your marketing efforts. But when I use video marketing, I publish my videos on top video sites to get maximum exposure and traffic. I use tubeMogul to publish my videos on multiple sites. I've uploaded some videos from my travels in NYC last yaer and chose Youtube for this. I do like watching videos on Vimeo too, but I don't have an account there and haven't tried to upload anything just yet. My Youtube account is anyway connected to all my other google services, so it was easy to work with. not to mention my camcorder software 'knows' how to automatically upload what I want to my Youtube account, so less work for me. The good and bad thing with youtube is the constant change. Once I find my way on the site they seem to do a overhaul and they keep getting more and more extreme.

As it has already been stated quite a number of times. Youtube wins this poll because of it's popularity.

But there are also other things making Youtube a really great video sharing site. One of these is the Monetizing option. Once your single video or even whole channel is doing well enough, Youtube will send you an e-mail asking if you would like to put adds on your videos and make revenue from them.

This is really great way of earning a little for indie animators like myself.

Now I do not know if there is such with Vimeo, but I have never seen any ads on Vimeo's videos. (this might also count as pro for vimeo)

I prefer Youtube. Mainly because it is more popular, it is used by more people. More content equals to more videos you will like.

Don't get me wrong, Vimeo is great, everything there is HD and well edited. Its like Facebook vs Google+. Both of them are good, but I prefer the more popular one because more people use it.

I don't have a lot of experience with Vimeo and can therefore not talk much about it. Youtube on the other hand has been my favorite site since 2008.
