YouTube or Vimeo?

From what I was told in my portfolio class is if you want to be professional use Vimeo becase of higher quality, but it can’t hurt to use both.

I honestly haven't heard much about vimeo but I feel youtube is easily the more popular of the two, which means it probably has more video choices. I think I'm going to have to go with youtube being better.

Vimeo has this premium feel to it that makes it good for high quality videos.  But if I'm honest I watch a lot more crap, which Youtube has in tones.  Vimeo has better quality, Youtube has better content. Content trumps quality in this case.  Although they keep on messing with the Youtube GUI which is irritating.

In all fairness I haven't worked a whole lot with Vimeo to learn all of it's features and functionality. I'm kind of leaning towards Youtube at this point in time though for several reasons. I like that Youtube can automatically stream the video at a variety of compression levels, without me having to do all that conversion processing on my end. Vimeo tends to only stream high quality video from what I can see, which may not load well for people on slower or limited connections. Also, Youtube has native mobile apps that many people already have installed, which gives it an edge over Vimeo.

 

On the other hand, Google is much more aggressive with auto censoring stuff on Youtube, whereas on Vimeo more content can get through and not be blocked. Often times Youtube's automated filtering can be too sensitive and generate a lot of false positives. Another advantage to Vimeo is if you don't want the video content necessarily associated with your Google account. Perhaps you are uploading something funny or risque but don't want it appearing associated with your Google profile indefinitely down the road.

I use Youtube 99.9% of the time. The only reason I visit Vimeo is through google searches. Hmm interesting enough Youtube is owned by Google, do I smell a conspiracy!?

I like both video services for different reasons.

 

I like Youtube the most because it has an incredible variety of content that simply can't be beat.

 

I like Vimeo because its content is more "professional" in presentation and a lot of it is independent artist and developer content, and educational content as well. I think it's because they have a very different set of criteria for the type of content they allow on their site.

At the end of the day I always go with Youtube. 

 

As much as I love Vimeo's "no frills" interface ultimately you just have to realize that the person may want to do some monetization and that people are very familiar with Youtube. For me the idea that the name is just so prevalent and the support there for so many external applications makes it a clear winner.

I never used Vimeo for streaming videos I guess it is because I have always been on Youtube. I just like Youtube for it being one of the easier and more well-known sites that has videos. I also like it for some of the old school shows I used to watch as a kid. I watched a clip last night of the X-men The Animated Series which was a huge classic back in the early 90's.

I voted for YouTube because it's just more popular and the embedded player works better for me. I actually like Vimeo more for sports videos though. Most Freeski edits are uploaded on Vimeo for example. I think it's because Vimeo actually displays 60fps videos with 60fps instead of scaling it down. YouTube is making the switch right now, but it's still gonna take some time I think.

That depends on the content. For marketing videos Youtube, for casual videos Youtube but for short films and cinematography Vimeo is better.

I strongly prefer YouTube. Vimeo doesn't even begin to hold a candle to YouTube, because YouTube is larger, easier to use, and has a very very active community. Vimeo has it's advantages, but they are not enough to sway me to use it over YouTube.

I like to use Vimeo for my professional and tutorial purposes. Versus YouTube I use for sound clips and quick reference videos where I know there will be a lot to choose from regardless of the quality.

I would go with Youtube. I never heard of Vimeo. I think Youtube is far more popular and far reaching when it comes to marketing products.

Since lots of people visit youtube then it would definitely be the better option of the two. I've tried looking through Vimeo on more than once occasion and never found the videos I was looking for. Others who do the same [and get similar results] would prefer looking through youtube first then if they don't find what they're looking for, try other video-hosting sites.

Youtube, it just works smoothly and I have a better experience with it, so in my opinion it's just better than Vimeo.

Youtube is my favorite because I have the option to monetize my content and the return are great if I get enough traffic. I've never really used vimeo but I don't like their look.

Youtube! I feel like Vimeo is more for hipster/indie short films and pirated videos. You don't really say someone is a "vimeo-er" (what would you even call someone that makes money off vimeo??)

I would definitely choose Youtube,Vimeo's transcoded 1080p bitrate is 20Mbps, then how do you explain the fact that Vimeo's streaming videos look dark and muddy? I am paying the Vimeo's premium rate, upload 20Mbps H.264 1080p videos produced by MainConcept's pro encoder and upgrade each video to 1080p after it is uploaded. Every one of them looks like crap after Vimeo is done transcoding them.

If I'm going to upload a video I choose YouTube. Why? Because it's what most people use and it's somewhat of the standard video platform. It's where most people are and it's where everyone is used to watching videos.

 

That's the advantage of becoming number one. Being #1 in itself makes you even more popular. You're the best because you're the best which exponentially grows your business.

I use Youtube since 2007. I think that is the place where the greatest artists upload their songs using Vevo or not but still you can find anything you want. Tehnical tutorial, make-up, gossips, science documentary or historical and full movies. When i search something there is the place i go.

6 years later and its an odd thing to think that there was a time where this question would even be asked. I still hear of Vimeo once in a while, but YouTube has become a giant. I would most definitely choose YouTube for all my video sharing or video watching.

Youtube. I think it has more better contents. Plus, it is very easy to use and much reliable because of its constant development. Youtube is not just a site. Its a way of life for some.

For me it has to be YouTube. It's because YouTube provides an easier platform for vloggers, producers, film makers, or just viewers in general. The website itself is very user friendly and can be easily accessed. It's also fast compared to vimeo which is great because the videos doesn't buffer even if your internet speed is at 5mbps. YouTube is also very considerate when it comes to content appropriateness and originality because it does censor a lot of inappropriate content and does stop piracy by blocking ad profits to plagiarized contents/videos. Although YouTube has become a little bit commercialized due to the ad loads popping out of the videos, I'm still positive about it because the ad loads became a source of income for those YouTubers who makes good content for viewers around the world.

OK so I am the new guy here.  Youtube is engaging in mass political censorship against conservatives and I have all but stopped using it as a result. I paid for a subscription to Vimeo because now I am a customer and they are less likely to mess with me as a result.
