Has anyone heard of dropshipping before?

I had a guy contact me through a freelancer website asking if I would be interested.

He is from Hong Kong and how it works is I would list his items on my Ebay account. Once sold he would ship them. After it arrives with the customer I then send this guy 70% of the sale and I keep 30%.

Sounds like a cool idea and maybe worth it, but before I jumped right into it I wondered if anyone else has had experience with it?

Yes. Sprint does the same thing with their indirect and online sales. Indirect sales can be a store with no inventory, or any other sale of the Sprint product not sold by sprint.

It's a good way to make a ton of money, if you can put a good enough system in place to grow with the demand.

Yes, I've done this before. It's common, more so than you'd think.

What is worth your time, did you make much?

I'm guessing not if you don't still do it ;)

Hey Nathan!

Luckily enough I actually have experience working in the eCommerce industry (for an actual corporation). I would be a little iffy about having some sort of drop-ship arrangement over seas because you have little oversight and guarantee for customer satisfaction. How does this guy handle fraudulent charges? Returns? Do any poor charges have to count against you? You may want to look into Fulfillment by Amazon. With FBA you pretty much send your inventory to Amazon who stores your products on site. They take care of fulfillment, payment processing, storage, etc for some sort of commission. Also, you gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace, which can lead to more sales. It might be something worth checking out.

Well dropshipping is a great business model if you want to focus on ecommerce. The biggest challenge in dropshipping is to deciding what you want to sell and locating a reliable supplier who can dropship for you. The biggest advantage of dropshipping is that you don't have to worry about managing inventories and shipping the products, that is handled by the supplier. However you do need to devote some time on a daily basis to process the orders, transfer the order details to supplier, answer the customer queries and so on. Overall it's a good option to start your online business.

Thanks for the input. Yeah after talking with him some more yesterday it doesn't look like a viable option. He wants me to sell crocks 6 pairs for $20 bucks ;) Not the kind of money I was looking for :)

Definitely. Personally I would only go as far as sourcing a particular product from overseas, and then have it drop shipped domestically. Besides Amazon will make sure neither you or the customer get the short end of the stick. I know some people who are either making very good money from this model, or making a decent passive income from it.

That's cool. I hadn't planned on doing this at all, just so happens I wondered about how it worked when I was randomly asked if I would be interested on a Freelancer site.

My question would be "Why does he want them listed on YOUR account?" The answer to which would presumably be "Because he's been banned for scamming people."

There are legitimate drop-shipping setups but they don't contact people on freelance sites or ask to use someone else's eBay account. If he'd asked you to do the posting on HIS account (basically admin to save him time), I'd understand... but using your account? Hmmm. Something dodgy there.

If anybody decides to start a dropshipping e-commerce business, SearchFit hosted software platform is a way to go. I tried Volusion and Magento before and SearchFit is the optimal shopping cart solution for dropshipping e-commerce features.

I've toyed with the idea of drop shipping, but so many people do it now. I always feel you should be ahead of the curve when it comes to this. Dont be afraid to try new things, but be afraid when the everyone get excited and greedy about a way you can make money.

That's interesting to know. I wonder if Verizon does this. If so, I may hop on that train.

I once tried this, or something very similar. Made a good 30 bucks with an one hour of work. Totally worth it, good experience. However I don't see a stable business in this so I left it there.

Drop shipping is a good deal. You sell and get commissions. You need not to have the goods. You just recieve youe commissions

Have you ever done this first hand?

I heard that term drop-shipping before but I don't how it works. I am not oriented with the nature of work.  Plus, I'm hesitant how to deal with these products. How will I access with the suppliers. I remember, Ebay and Amazon, are the best online shop for this work. You can find more sale items but you need to monitor it on daily basis.
