Weird Keyboard problem with Windows 7

Recommended Posts

Windows 7 does not recognize my keyboard on the first startup of my computer, only the mouse is recognized.

I have to restart my computer every time for the keyboard to be recognized and usable with Windows 7.

The keyboard and the Mouse are from Microsoft, so I don't understand why this is happening. ;)

This problem is really bugging me as I can't seem to find any solution to fix it.

Maybe someone from this forum can help me??

Is it a wireless (bluetooth or infrared) keyboard? And what type of port are you using? I'm going to assume USB, so on that note, do you have a USB hub that it is plugged into?

I know that if I've had problems with the incorrect driver being loaded (causing a non-functional keyboard or mouse), I have to uninstall the driver, delete the driver, reboot the computer, and plug it back in. If it installs the incorrect driver again, I'd turn off automatic installation of drivers.

Go to Control Panel > System (or the windows key and the pause button) > Advanced System Settings link on the left > Hardware Tab > Device Installation Settings > And Choose NO

Hope that helps some

The keyboard is not wireless and you assumed right, I'm using a USB port (no hub).

I'll try your solution when I'll get home later and I'll keep you updated.

Thanks for your help, Tony!

Hey Tony,

I've tried your solution but it didn't help...

Anyway, it's not such a big problem as I managed to use my keyboard after restarting the computer.

It's just a bit annoying and I hope I'll find out one day what is causing this problem.

Hey did you try upgrading the drivers? Sometimes the keyboards need drivers (mine did) because either the usb was faulty or the line just wouldnt be recognized by the pc. Its very frustrating but was an easy fix for me!

I hate having keyboard problems; worse than mouse problems.

There are several things you can do. First locate the keyboard icon in the Conrol Panel and check its properties. There is an option to troubleshoot and update the driver, see if that works.

If the above method doesn't work, you can try removing the keyboard and adding it back again. I remember I faced similar problem with my mouse so I opened the Device Manager and removed the mouse from the list. Then I added the mouse manually through Add Hardware wizard and installed the driver from the CD that came with the mouse. This resolved the problem for me.

You should also check Microsoft's website to see if there are any driver updates available for your keyboard. Download and install the latest updates and that should solve your problem.

If they're both USB (mouse and keyboard), try switching the ports. You might have some kind of a weird dodgy USB port or something. I've had that on a desktop before: once I'd switched the mouse and keyboard everything was fine. If I ever put them back in the other slots, the mouse goes all freaky-deaky on me and the keyboard goes Poltergeist and starts typing stuff on its own. :)

Try connecting it to a different USB port. Best way is getting a keyboard with PS/2 connection, and see if the problem is solved. I mean, why using an extra USB slot when you have a connection for keyboard only? That's just my opinion tho.
