phpBB is always the one that I go to if I need to explain anything or want to play with something. Its nice and easy ACP is something that I have always liked.

IPB vs vBulletin, I think IPB has the upper hand. They are working to improve their software and release updates. vBulletin has almost went stagnate at this point.

In my opinion I think MyBB is the best forum software around. It is really easy to customize and has a great UI. Never used any paid softwares so I can't give opinion on them.

My vote is for Xenforo its quick and clean and my members love it! I have never had a single complaint from any member about my forum software. Matter of fact most members praise the forum and tell me how good it is. And from a admin standpoint Xenforo is a pleasure to work with.
